The name Sidney Gottlieb is but an obscure footnote. Yet for a generation of Americans who came of age in the Cold War, his experiments came to define the CIA as a rogue agency. The most notorious project was MK-ULTRA, created in 1953. It was, in Gottlieb's words, intended to explore 'various techniques of behavior control in intelligence operations.' It funded an array of research, including electric-shock treatments, hypnosis and experiments designed to program or deprogram a subject's memory.

Emails released in the United States Department of Justice files show that the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein was offered the chance to buy into a sprawling building tied to the Department of Defense in 2016. The 84,710-square-metre (101,312-suqare-yard) complex, located roughly 1.6km (1 mile) from the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, was described in an investor deck as a "mission-critical" site and "the only property in Arlington, Virginia other than the Pentagon itself with the ability to meet the space and infrastructure needs of the DOD". The proposed purchase price was about $116m. The structure of the deal would have made Epstein a co-owner and, effectively, a landlord to the US government. The Pentagon-linked proposal formed part of three documents – an email, an investor presentation and a deal summary – contained within the newly released files. David Stern, a businessman who referred to himself as Epstein's "soldier", forwarded the offer. Stern also served as a close aide to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was arrested on Thursday on "suspicion of misconduct in public office" following revelations in the Epstein files. Stern also sent Epstein a separate proposal in 2015 to invest in two FBI field offices in Richmond and Baltimore. That deal required an initial $25m, followed by a further $80m, with ownership routed through a Cayman Islands offshore entity. Real estate investor Jonathan D Fascitelli originated both property proposals.

Donald Trump has signed an executive order protecting production of glyphosate-based herbicides, such as Roundup, which some bodies and studies have linked to cancer and which are the subject of widespread US litigation. The order also protects domestic production of phosphorus, which is used in making glyphosate and other agricultural chemicals, as well as a range of other products, including some in military defense. Ensuring "robust domestic elemental phosphorus mining and United States-based production of glyphosate-based herbicides is central to American economic and national security", the order states. Neither the executive order nor the fact sheet the White House put out accompanying the order discloses that glyphosate-based herbicides have been linked to an array of cancers and other health problems in multiple independent research studies and by cancer experts of the World Health Organization (WHO). The move by the White House comes as Roundup maker Bayer is facing tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging the company's glyphosate herbicides cause cancer and the company failed to warn farmers and other users of the risks. The company, which inherited the litigation when it bought Monsanto in 2018, has already paid out billions of dollars in settlements and jury verdicts and said this week it was proposing to pay $7.25bn in a class action settlement to try to head off future lawsuits.

The name of Former US President George Bush has allegedly appeared in the latest tranche of Epstein Files released by the US authorities. The files linked to Jeffrey Epstein include a reference to "George Bush 1" in a complaint filed with the New York Police Department. The mention has reignited online attention and prompted fresh scrutiny of what the files actually show – and what they do not. The latest tranche contains police reports, witness statements and investigative notes in which a purported victim's account names several highprofile figures. At a bustling money changer in northwestern Syria, a 46-year-old farmer gripped a plastic card like a lifeline. She had never heard of cryptocurrency, but the card held $500 of it to help restart her farm after nearly 14 years of civil war. Where had such technology come from, she asked. The answer surprised her: Afghanistan. Blockchain-based cash transfers are not the kind of innovation that many people would expect from a country better known for its repressive Taliban leadership, which views the internet with suspicion. But in a nation that has largely turned its back on the world, an Afghan start-up is building tools that it hopes will transform how humanitarian aid is delivered in countries shattered by conflict. "We've lived through these challenges ourselves, so we know how to develop an approach that works," said Zakia Hussaini, 26, a programmer at the start-up, HesabPay, which designed the technology driving Ms. Almahmoud's card. An early proponent of the platform was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The agency uses it to support more than 86,000 families in Afghanistan in one of the biggest public blockchain aid initiatives in the world. Mercy Corps, which donated the funds to Ms. Almahmoud, worked with HesabPay to expand its reach to include Syria, and programs for Sudan and Haiti are in development. [At] a news conference Tuesday on unidentified anomalous phenomena ... witnesses spoke about a 1996 UFO crash in Varginha, Brazil. Witnesses reported a cigar-shaped object in distress that crashed into a field. Three young women reportedly encountered a nonhuman entity, and there are reports that other entities were recovered, some dead and one possibly still living. The first witness to speak was Carlos, a Brazilian man who says he witnessed the crash of a nonterrestrial craft in January of 1996. He described half the craft being intact, with debris from the rest scattered around and a smell of ammonia and rotten eggs. Carlos said Army vehicles arrived shortly after. The soldiers ordered him to leave at gunpoint. Liliane Silva described encountering a living entity described as a being while taking a shortcut home from work. She described a short creature with red eyes that was brown and looked as if it was covered in oil, with veins from its neck to its arms, and said she felt like the world was being stopped when she looked at it. Silva said she had the sensation that the creature was suffering and needed help. She and the women she was with ran toward her house in fear. Katia Xavier, another one of those women, said she felt fear when encountering the creature, which she said had oily skin, a big head, three fingers on its hand and a big foot. She said she was going to help, but was pulled away by Silva.

America's factory farms generate nearly a trillion pounds of manure every year, and way too much of it ends up in rivers, lakes and estuaries. Unlike factories, most factory farms aren't legally responsible for their pollution. Unlike human poop, animal poop isn't legally required to be treated before it is released into the environment. America's concentrated animal feeding operations, the industrial livestock farms known as C.A.F.O.s, produce twice as much waste as America's toilets, but nobody is tracking where or how it gets flushed. C.A.F.O.s keep getting bigger, even though they are wildly unpopular. Polls from the A.S.P.C.A. suggest that 89 percent of Americans are concerned about factory farms and 74 percent want to ban new ones. The critics now include right-wing natural-food advocates as well as left-wing environmentalists and animal rights activists. Like it or not, 99 percent of U.S. meat now comes from factory farms. The solution to pollution from big C.A.F.O.s is not to ban them or even to restrict their size. It's to regulate them like any other industrial polluter. States enforce the Clean Water Act, and some are more vigilant than others about preventing farmers from applying their manure in ways that tend to wash it into waterways. But a lot still ends up there. A feedlot cow can unload 100 pounds of manure a day, and unlike fracking water, nuclear waste and municipal sewage, nobody's really responsible for making sure it doesn't contaminate nature.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will launch a study on cellphone radiation, a department spokesman said on Thursday, building on Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr's criticism linking them to neurological damage and cancer. Last year, the department said 22 states had restricted cellphone use in schools to improve the mental and physical health of children under the "Make America Healthy Again" movement. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also took down old webpages saying cellphones are not dangerous. "The FDA removed webpages with old conclusions about cell phone radiation while HHS undertakes a study on electromagnetic radiation and health research to identify gaps in knowledge, including on new technologies, to ensure safety and efficacy," said HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon. "The study was directed by President Trump's MAHA Commission in its strategy report," Nixon added. However, some webpages of agencies such as the FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to say that to date there is no credible evidence pointing to health problems from cellphone radiation. The National Cancer Institute, under the National Institutes of Health, says "evidence to date suggests that cellphone use does not cause brain or other kinds of cancer in humans."

CIA and DEA ... drug operations were intimately tied to the Latin American anticommunist brigades funded by Western capital throughout the Cold War, and the brutal liquidation of the Left these narco-terrorists often carried out. Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro is being held in a Brooklyn jail charged with smuggling cocaine into the United States. But even the Drug Enforcement Agency estimates that less than 10 percent of cocaine shipments to the U.S come through Venezuela. The vast majority of cocaine shipments originate in Colombia and move through the Pacific route and Mexico. There are no shortages of Latin American leaders and military chiefs who are heavily involved in drug trafficking but who are considered close allies of the United States. One of them, former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, was pardoned by Donald Trump last month, after he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for conspiring to distribute over 400 tons of cocaine in the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Trump's national security advisor, comes out of the rightwing Cuban exile community in Miami, one that has for decades engaged in drug trafficking and a dirty war against those it condemns, like Maduro, of being communists. These anti-communist Cubans, including Rubio's inner circle, have [close ties] with the drug trade and [support] Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa, whose family fruit business is accused of trafficking 700 kilos of cocaine. Rubio hailed Ecuadoran President Daniel Noboa, who leads a country whose homicide rate has risen eightfold since 2016, as an â€incredibly willing partner' who â€has done more just in the last couple years to take the fight to these narco-terrorists and these threats to the security and stability of Ecuador than any previous administration.' Just five months earlier, a damning investigation revealed that Noboa's family fruit business had trafficked 700 kilos of cocaine to Europe in banana crates between 2020 and 2022.

In prisons and jails across the US, people are routinely fed unhealthy, tasteless or inedible meals. Many are left hungry and malnourished, with devastating long-term health consequences. The hidden crisis affecting millions of incarcerated people is the subject of Eating Behind Bars, a new book offering a disturbing account of how correctional institutions punish their residents through the food they provide and withhold. The book by Leslie Soble ... describes roaches and rats in prison kitchens, rotten meat and guard dogs who are fed better meals than incarcerated people. It is a compelling, and at times nauseating, indictment of the criminal justice system. Soble manages the Food in Prison Project at Impact Justice, a national non-profit that advocates for reforms and supports incarcerated people. The prison food crisis [is] a public health crisis, with estimates suggesting each year behind bars reduces life expectancy by two years. It's a labor rights issue, as incarcerated people earn pennies per hour running the kitchens, barely enough to buy canteen snacks to supplement their meager diets. And there are environmental ramifications: US correctional facilities create an estimated 300,000 tons of food waste annually as residents reject unpalatable offerings. A typical prison diet is very high in ultra-processed foods, highly refined carbohydrates, sugar and salt, and very low in fresh fruits and vegetables, quality protein, whole grains.

"These plants are the winners, the ones that get to pass their genes on [to future generations]," says Lee DeHaan of the Land Institute, an agricultural non-profit based in Salina, Kansas. If DeHaan's breeding programme maintains its current progress, the descendant of these young perennial crop plants could one day usher in a wholesale revolution in agriculture. The plants are intermediate wheatgrass. Since 2010, DeHaan has been transforming this small-seeded, wild species into a high-yielding, domesticated grain crop called Kernza. He believes it will eventually be a viable – and far more sustainable – alternative to annual wheat, the world's most widely grown crop and the source of one in five of all calories consumed by humanity. Remarkably, DeHaan does not paint the current agricultural-industrial complex as the enemy. "Every disruptive technology is always opposed by those being disrupted," he says. "But if the companies [that make up] the current system can adjust to the disruption, they can play in that new world just the same." The Land Institute's strategy is redirection rather than replacement. "Our trajectory is to eventually get the resources that are currently dedicated to annual grain crops directed to developing varieties of perennials," says DeHaan. "That's our [route to] success." There are signs that this is already working, with the food firm General Mills now incorporating Kernza into its breakfast cereals.

A secret program, known as AAWSAP, was created in 2008 with support from Nevada Senator Harry Reid and became the largest UFO investigation ever undertaken by the U.S. Government. The American weapons maker Anduril ... is partnering with EDGE Group, a weapons conglomerate controlled by the United Arab Emirates, a nation run entirely by the royal families of its seven emirates that permits virtually none of the activities typically associated with democratic societies. In the UAE, free expression and association are outlawed, and dissident speech is routinely and brutally punished without due process. A 2024 assessment of political rights and civil liberties by Freedom House, a U.S. State Department-backed think tank, gave the UAE a score of 18 out of 100. The EDGE–Anduril Production Alliance, as it will be known, will focus on autonomous weapons systems, including the production of Anduril's "Omen" drone. The UAE has agreed to purchase the first 50 Omen drones built through the partnership. EDGE Chair Faisal Al Bannai explained in a 2019 interview that EDGE was working to develop weapons systems tailored to defeating low-tech "militia-style" militant groups. Nathaniel Raymonds, who leads the Humanitarian Research Lab at the Yale School of Public Health ... argued that "not since Operation Cyclone," the CIA effort to arm the Afghan mujahideen, "has there been a covert action by any nation state to arm a paramilitary proxy group at this scale and sophistication and try to write it off as just a series of happy coincidences."

Research on ALS, a debilitating condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease that leads to muscle weakness and death, has found a link between exposure to pesticides and disease development. A new study led by ... Alison O'Neil provides insight into how a specific pesticide damages the nerve cells affected in ALS patients. The paper, published in the prestigious multidisciplinary journal PLOS One, is a follow up to another study O'Neil conducted on the pesticide known as cis-chlordane, which is banned but persists in the environment. "The goal of the study was to try to figure out why cis-chlordane is able to kill motor neurons," which are the nerve cells that die in ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), she said. "It turns out that [the pesticides] are affecting the mitochondria, which are the powerhouse of the cell," said O'Neil. Without mitochondria, the motor neurons weaken and die. This insight points to potential for more effective treatments for a disease when current therapies extend life by only a few months. "The implications of that finding helps us determine what kind of drugs people need," said O'Neil. Since there is clearly an environmental component in most cases of ALS, said Clackson, the research can help pinpoint what is contributing to the disease and potentially change disease trajectory. "If we see these early biomarkers, say pesticides in the blood, then we can perhaps treat them earlier and have a completely different outcome," he said.

Wade Milyard heard the voice from "out of nowhere" and knew he needed to listen–he thought it was God, or some other higher power. The former canine officer for the Frederick Police Department in Maryland was responding to a domestic dispute at a homeless camp. Soon after he investigated the disturbance, the voice rang out. "Ask them about their laundry." Milyard heeded the voice, asked the question, and unknowingly set the course for a prayer-fulfilling future. The homeless couple he interviewed told him they typically washed their laundry in a nearby creek. The cop never forgot that response, nor his call to service. He pooled multiple donations with some of his own money and went to work creating a full service laundromat on wheels. Fresh Step Laundry was born–with a mission "to help restore dignity to the unhoused community by providing free, accessible, and hygienic laundry." Since retiring from the police force in January, the 45-year-old has been traveling around his Maryland city, which is near D.C., making a difference–one load of wash at a time. He's set a schedule so people can meet him to take advantage of his laundry service, and his email is at the bottom of the web page. In the last several weeks alone, Fresh Step has washed more than 2,000 pounds of laundry and his next goal is to add a second vehicle so he can double the number of people he can serve.

As lawmakers hope President Donald Trump will join efforts to create more transparency around government information on UFOs, they are also turning their attention to strange sightings in and around the ocean. Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., is one of a bipartisan group of lawmakers pushing the Pentagon for more information on alleged secret programs regarding UFOs. He is concerned not just about unexplained objects in the air but also those in the ocean. Burchett pointed out that many UFO encounters pilots have reported have been over the deep oceans, and there have been reports of things diving into the water. Much of the world's oceans remain unexplored, which Burchett noted would make an appealing location for any entity trying to go unnoticed. "You would go where you would be least disturbed," he said. Burchett said Navy officials who have broached the subject with him suggested the existence of five or six underground bases. Burchett says he will be meeting with the president soon, and it is one subject he hopes to discuss. "It still just bothers me that our government won't come forward with it," Burchett said. "I am part of the government, and I don't trust it. You have to ask yourself, why are we being told to keep quiet? Why the secrecy?"

A scientific study that regulators around the world relied on for decades to justify continued approval of glyphosate was quietly retracted last Friday over serious ethical issues including secret authorship by Monsanto employees – raising questions about the pesticide-approval process in the U.S. and globally. The April 2000 study by Gary Williams, Robert Kroes and Ian Munro – which concluded glyphosate does not pose a health risk to humans at typical exposure levels – was ghostwritten by Monsanto employees, and was "based solely on unpublished studies from Monsanto," wrote Martin van den Berg, co-editor-in-chief of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. It also ignored "multiple other long-term chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies" that were available at the time. Some of the study authors may also have received undisclosed financial compensation from Monsanto, he noted. The retraction came years after internal corporate documents first revealed in 2017 that Monsanto employees were heavily involved in drafting the paper. "What took them so long to retract it?" asked Michael Hansen, senior scientist of advocacy at Consumer Reports. The ghostwritten paper is in the top 0.1% of citations among academic papers discussing glyphosate. The retraction exposes the flaws of a regulatory system that relies heavily on corporate research, and an academic publishing system that is often used as a tool for corporate product defense.

Since May of this year, Marco Rubio has served in a dual role as President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor and Secretary of State. As such, it is significant that Rubio believes that elements within the US government have recovered technology from a nonhuman intelligence, reverse-engineered it, and let private military contractors take control of it in ways that could be undermining national security and result in a Pearl Harbor-like event. "The real risk in transferring technology that is not useful to us today to a corporate entity over decades," says Rubio, "is that the corporate entity comes to basically possess and control access to it for their own purposes, not for the purposes of national security." Rubio directly references aliens in the context of government secrecy. "I think there's this assumption that presidents can walk into the Oval Office on day one and say, â€All right, take me to Roswell. Show me the alien bodies.' That really is a naive understanding of how our government works. Even presidents have often been operating on a need-to-know basis." "We have people that have very high clearances," said Rubio, "who have come forward with some claims about the US having in the past recovered exotic materials and then we reverse-engineered those materials to make advances in our own defenses and technologies. They signed agreements that they would face jail time, or [that] it would cost them their lives if they spoke out."

It began in the small Catalan town of Taradell as a plan to provide local people with allotments where they could grow their own food. Four activists came together with the aim of promoting good environmental practices in local agriculture and business, as well as supplying renewable energy. The town has a strong tradition of community action, and as the initiative gathered momentum, the activists formed a cooperative, Taradell Sostenible, which now has 111 members and supplies power to more than 100 households. These include some of the area's most vulnerable citizens, says Eugeni Vila, the coop's president. "The question was how could people with few resources join the coop when membership costs â‚Ź100," says Vila. "We agreed that people designated as poor by the local authority could join for only â‚Ź25 and thus benefit from the cheap electricity we generate." The [Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy]'s policy aims to bring cheap electricity to households suffering from pobreza energĂ©tica (fuel poverty) who cannot afford the upfront cost of installing solar panels – typically â‚Ź5,000-6,000 for each household. "We've developed a formula to help people who are struggling to get by through incorporating them into a network that helps them to improve their situation," [Vila] says. "We've taken advantage of the EU Sun4All scheme to develop a system to assess who are the vulnerable families, and not just in terms of fuel poverty."
