Mystery meat and maggot-infested produce: the disturbing reality of US prison food
2025-12-31, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/31/eating-behind-bars-book-priso...

In prisons and jails across the US, people are routinely fed unhealthy, tasteless or inedible meals. Many are left hungry and malnourished, with devastating long-term health consequences. The hidden crisis affecting millions of incarcerated people is the subject of Eating Behind Bars, a new book offering a disturbing account of how correctional institutions punish their residents through the food they provide and withhold. The book by Leslie Soble ... describes roaches and rats in prison kitchens, rotten meat and guard dogs who are fed better meals than incarcerated people. It is a compelling, and at times nauseating, indictment of the criminal justice system. Soble manages the Food in Prison Project at Impact Justice, a national non-profit that advocates for reforms and supports incarcerated people. The prison food crisis [is] a public health crisis, with estimates suggesting each year behind bars reduces life expectancy by two years. It's a labor rights issue, as incarcerated people earn pennies per hour running the kitchens, barely enough to buy canteen snacks to supplement their meager diets. And there are environmental ramifications: US correctional facilities create an estimated 300,000 tons of food waste annually as residents reject unpalatable offerings. A typical prison diet is very high in ultra-processed foods, highly refined carbohydrates, sugar and salt, and very low in fresh fruits and vegetables, quality protein, whole grains.

‘Soil is more important than oil': inside the perennial grain revolution
2025-12-12, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/dec/12/soil-is-more-important-th...

"These plants are the winners, the ones that get to pass their genes on [to future generations]," says Lee DeHaan of the Land Institute, an agricultural non-profit based in Salina, Kansas. If DeHaan's breeding programme maintains its current progress, the descendant of these young perennial crop plants could one day usher in a wholesale revolution in agriculture. The plants are intermediate wheatgrass. Since 2010, DeHaan has been transforming this small-seeded, wild species into a high-yielding, domesticated grain crop called Kernza. He believes it will eventually be a viable – and far more sustainable – alternative to annual wheat, the world's most widely grown crop and the source of one in five of all calories consumed by humanity. Remarkably, DeHaan does not paint the current agricultural-industrial complex as the enemy. "Every disruptive technology is always opposed by those being disrupted," he says. "But if the companies [that make up] the current system can adjust to the disruption, they can play in that new world just the same." The Land Institute's strategy is redirection rather than replacement. "Our trajectory is to eventually get the resources that are currently dedicated to annual grain crops directed to developing varieties of perennials," says DeHaan. "That's our [route to] success." There are signs that this is already working, with the food firm General Mills now incorporating Kernza into its breakfast cereals.

Secret government UFO program reveals paranormal events
2025-12-11, CBS News (Local Las Vegas Affiliate)
https://www.8newsnow.com/mystery-wire/secret-government-ufo-program-reveals-p...

A secret program, known as AAWSAP, was created in 2008 with support from Nevada Senator Harry Reid and became the largest UFO investigation ever undertaken by the U.S. Government. But the investigators for the program, all of whom had top-secret security clearances, encountered things that were far stranger than UFOs, phenomena that could be accurately described as "paranormal." AAWSAP, which stands for Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program, [found] that these unknown craft, whatever they are, seem to generate spooky phenomena that seemingly shouldn't exist. "We heavily went into Skinwalker Ranch, a property of Robert Bigelow's," [the program's director Dr. James] Lacatski said. The main focus was UFOs and UFO technology, but one smaller focus was measurable health effects on people who encountered a UFO and were physically harmed, or developed rare diseases, including psychological effects. "People who openly say ‘I observed a UFO up close,' ... always seemed to have a paranormal connection," Lacatski said. Nearly everyone in AAWSAP who visited the Bigelow Ranch [experienced] what is now known as the hitchhiker effect. At least five highly experienced intelligence officers ... came into contact with paranormal phenomena, and then took it home with them. They and their families would see balls of light inside their homes, shadowy figures, even creatures that were physical.

Anduril Partners With UAE Bomb Maker Accused of Arming Sudan's Genocide
2025-12-11, The Intercept
https://theintercept.com/2025/12/11/anduril-uae-weapons-edge-sudan/

The American weapons maker Anduril ... is partnering with EDGE Group, a weapons conglomerate controlled by the United Arab Emirates, a nation run entirely by the royal families of its seven emirates that permits virtually none of the activities typically associated with democratic societies. In the UAE, free expression and association are outlawed, and dissident speech is routinely and brutally punished without due process. A 2024 assessment of political rights and civil liberties by Freedom House, a U.S. State Department-backed think tank, gave the UAE a score of 18 out of 100. The EDGE–Anduril Production Alliance, as it will be known, will focus on autonomous weapons systems, including the production of Anduril's "Omen" drone. The UAE has agreed to purchase the first 50 Omen drones built through the partnership. EDGE Chair Faisal Al Bannai explained in a 2019 interview that EDGE was working to develop weapons systems tailored to defeating low-tech "militia-style" militant groups. Nathaniel Raymonds, who leads the Humanitarian Research Lab at the Yale School of Public Health ... argued that "not since Operation Cyclone," the CIA effort to arm the Afghan mujahideen, "has there been a covert action by any nation state to arm a paramilitary proxy group at this scale and sophistication and try to write it off as just a series of happy coincidences."

Study Probes Link Between Pesticides and ALS
2025-12-09, Wesleyan University
https://www.wesleyan.edu/about/news/2025/12/study-probes-pesticides-als.html

Research on ALS, a debilitating condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease that leads to muscle weakness and death, has found a link between exposure to pesticides and disease development. A new study led by ... Alison O'Neil provides insight into how a specific pesticide damages the nerve cells affected in ALS patients. The paper, published in the prestigious multidisciplinary journal PLOS One, is a follow up to another study O'Neil conducted on the pesticide known as cis-chlordane, which is banned but persists in the environment. "The goal of the study was to try to figure out why cis-chlordane is able to kill motor neurons," which are the nerve cells that die in ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), she said. "It turns out that [the pesticides] are affecting the mitochondria, which are the powerhouse of the cell," said O'Neil. Without mitochondria, the motor neurons weaken and die. This insight points to potential for more effective treatments for a disease when current therapies extend life by only a few months. "The implications of that finding helps us determine what kind of drugs people need," said O'Neil. Since there is clearly an environmental component in most cases of ALS, said Clackson, the research can help pinpoint what is contributing to the disease and potentially change disease trajectory. "If we see these early biomarkers, say pesticides in the blood, then we can perhaps treat them earlier and have a completely different outcome," he said.

Note: It's recently come out that the popular pesticide paraquat probably causes Parkinson's disease. For more along these lines, read our concise summaries of news articles on health and toxic chemicals.

Retired Cop Rehabs Bus into Mobile Laundry: He Now Washes Clothes for the Homeless
2025-12-06, Good News Network
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/retired-cop-now-drives-mobile-laundry-van-to-...

Wade Milyard heard the voice from "out of nowhere" and knew he needed to listen–he thought it was God, or some other higher power. The former canine officer for the Frederick Police Department in Maryland was responding to a domestic dispute at a homeless camp. Soon after he investigated the disturbance, the voice rang out. "Ask them about their laundry." Milyard heeded the voice, asked the question, and unknowingly set the course for a prayer-fulfilling future. The homeless couple he interviewed told him they typically washed their laundry in a nearby creek. The cop never forgot that response, nor his call to service. He pooled multiple donations with some of his own money and went to work creating a full service laundromat on wheels. Fresh Step Laundry was born–with a mission "to help restore dignity to the unhoused community by providing free, accessible, and hygienic laundry." Since retiring from the police force in January, the 45-year-old has been traveling around his Maryland city, which is near D.C., making a difference–one load of wash at a time. He's set a schedule so people can meet him to take advantage of his laundry service, and his email is at the bottom of the web page. In the last several weeks alone, Fresh Step has washed more than 2,000 pounds of laundry and his next goal is to add a second vehicle so he can double the number of people he can serve.

Underwater UFOs new area of interest for lawmakers
2025-12-06, News Nation
https://www.newsnationnow.com/space/ufo/underwater-ufos-special/

As lawmakers hope President Donald Trump will join efforts to create more transparency around government information on UFOs, they are also turning their attention to strange sightings in and around the ocean. Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., is one of a bipartisan group of lawmakers pushing the Pentagon for more information on alleged secret programs regarding UFOs. Several high-profile whistleblowers have come forward with allegations of secret programs, recovered UFO technology, and even alleging the government has remains of non-human intelligence. He is concerned not just about unexplained objects in the air but also those in the ocean. Burchett pointed out that many UFO encounters pilots have reported have been over the deep oceans, and there have been reports of things diving into the water. Much of the world's oceans remain unexplored, which Burchett noted would make an appealing location for any entity trying to go unnoticed. "You would go where you would be least disturbed," he said. Burchett said Navy officials who have broached the subject with him suggested the existence of five or six underground bases. Burchett says he will be meeting with the president soon, and it is one subject he hopes to discuss. "It still just bothers me that our government won't come forward with it," Burchett said. "I am part of the government, and I don't trust it. You have to ask yourself, why are we being told to keep quiet? Why the secrecy?"

Landmark glyphosate safety study retracted for Monsanto ghostwriting, other ethics problems
2025-12-03, US Right to Know
https://usrtk.org/pesticides/landmark-glyphosate-safety-study-retracted-for-m...

A scientific study that regulators around the world relied on for decades to justify continued approval of glyphosate was quietly retracted last Friday over serious ethical issues including secret authorship by Monsanto employees – raising questions about the pesticide-approval process in the U.S. and globally. The April 2000 study by Gary Williams, Robert Kroes and Ian Munro – which concluded glyphosate does not pose a health risk to humans at typical exposure levels – was ghostwritten by Monsanto employees, and was "based solely on unpublished studies from Monsanto," wrote Martin van den Berg, co-editor-in-chief of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. It also ignored "multiple other long-term chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies" that were available at the time. Some of the study authors may also have received undisclosed financial compensation from Monsanto, he noted. The retraction came years after internal corporate documents first revealed in 2017 that Monsanto employees were heavily involved in drafting the paper. "What took them so long to retract it?" asked Michael Hansen, senior scientist of advocacy at Consumer Reports. The ghostwritten paper is in the top 0.1% of citations among academic papers discussing glyphosate. The retraction exposes the flaws of a regulatory system that relies heavily on corporate research, and an academic publishing system that is often used as a tool for corporate product defense.

Secretary of State Rubio Believes U.S. Recovered Alien Tech And Gave It To Private Military Contractors
2025-12-02, Public on Substack
https://www.public.news/p/secretary-of-state-rubio-believes

Since May of this year, Marco Rubio has served in a dual role as President Donald Trump's National Security Advisor and Secretary of State. As such, it is significant that Rubio believes that elements within the US government have recovered technology from a nonhuman intelligence, reverse-engineered it, and let private military contractors take control of it in ways that could be undermining national security and result in a Pearl Harbor-like event. "The real risk in transferring technology that is not useful to us today to a corporate entity over decades," says Rubio, "is that the corporate entity comes to basically possess and control access to it for their own purposes, not for the purposes of national security." Rubio directly references aliens in the context of government secrecy. "I think there's this assumption that presidents can walk into the Oval Office on day one and say, ‘All right, take me to Roswell. Show me the alien bodies.' That really is a naive understanding of how our government works. Even presidents have often been operating on a need-to-know basis." "We have people that have very high clearances," said Rubio, "who have come forward with some claims about the US having in the past recovered exotic materials and then we reverse-engineered those materials to make advances in our own defenses and technologies. They signed agreements that they would face jail time, or [that] it would cost them their lives if they spoke out."

‘We're proud to be pioneers': inside Spain's community energy revolution
2025-11-14, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/nov/14/were-proud-to-be-pioneers...

It began in the small Catalan town of Taradell as a plan to provide local people with allotments where they could grow their own food. Four activists came together with the aim of promoting good environmental practices in local agriculture and business, as well as supplying renewable energy. The town has a strong tradition of community action, and as the initiative gathered momentum, the activists formed a cooperative, Taradell Sostenible, which now has 111 members and supplies power to more than 100 households. These include some of the area's most vulnerable citizens, says Eugeni Vila, the coop's president. "The question was how could people with few resources join the coop when membership costs ₏100," says Vila. "We agreed that people designated as poor by the local authority could join for only ₏25 and thus benefit from the cheap electricity we generate." The [Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy]'s policy aims to bring cheap electricity to households suffering from pobreza energĂ©tica (fuel poverty) who cannot afford the upfront cost of installing solar panels – typically ₏5,000-6,000 for each household. "We've developed a formula to help people who are struggling to get by through incorporating them into a network that helps them to improve their situation," [Vila] says. "We've taken advantage of the EU Sun4All scheme to develop a system to assess who are the vulnerable families, and not just in terms of fuel poverty."

What a Pet Parrot Taught a Woman About ‘Love, Compassion and Patience' After Leaving a 'Cult' as a Teen
2025-11-05, People
https://people.com/parrot-institute-in-basic-life-principles-religious-group-...

Jen Taylor-O'Connor grew up in what she calls a "garden variety Christian" home, though things changed when her family enrolled her in the Institute in Basic Life Principles, led by disgraced minister Bill Gothard, as a teen. And now, decades after breaking free from IBLP – which Taylor-O'Connor, 45, refers to as a "cult" – she's opening up about how her pet parrots helped her heal in the documentary Parrot Kindergarten. The film looks at Taylor-O'Connor's ongoing research on animal communication and the establishment of her Parrot Kindergarten program, which helps teach other bird parents what she's learned. She recalls first being drawn to birds as a way to help combat feelings of loneliness and navigate the trauma she'd experienced as a child. Though she'd had other birds before, when Taylor-O'Connor brought home her parrot Ellie, who is at the center of the documentary, she noticed that the bird was exhibiting anger and frustration. She found herself relating to Ellie and wondering how to help. "I didn't want her to experience what I had felt from my training center experiences, which is you just keep it all inside and then it bubbles out in harder ways. I wanted her to always have a voice," she says. "So, that's how it began to spur me into ‘What does it look like for her to communicate? What does it look like for other animals to communicate?'" As a result, she started teaching Ellie tricks and saw her demeanor totally change as she developed a love of learning.

What we're learning about consciousness from master meditators' brains
2025-11-05, New Scientist
https://www.newscientist.com/article/2501144-what-were-learning-about-conscio...

Reducing stress and softening the sharper edges of anxiety in this way are beginners' steps when it comes to the practice of meditation. Put in the hours, though, and you may well reach the deep end: a place where radical, long-lasting upgrades to how you feel and what you experience are possible. Now, these mental transformations are being examined and understood by neuroscientists at world-leading institutions. Matthew Sacchet [is the] director of the Meditation Research Program at Harvard Medical School. His team works hand in hand with advanced meditators, such as Buddhist monks, exploring how the material brain changes because of subjective experiences that are often considered spiritual in nature. Using state-of-the-art brain scanners, his team pinpoints the neural changes that occur across a variety of deep meditative practices. Beyond mindfulness-related stress reduction, advanced practitioners report experiences of ecstatic bliss, deep insights into their own minds, radical compassionate states and prosocial ways of being, and even shifts in their fundamental sense of self. Advanced meditators sometimes report states of consciousness that are described as deeply peaceful, mentally clear or subjectively non-dual – meaning there is no perceived distinction between self and other. These aren't just subjective reports: we observe changes in the brain that support their existence.

Dimming the sun ‘could make climate change worse'
2025-11-05, Yahoo News
https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/dimming-sun-could-climate-change-08000054...

Deflecting the sun to fight climate change could trigger droughts and hurricanes, the Royal Society has warned. In a new report, experts argued solar radiation modification (SRM) could reduce global temperatures but "worsen rather than ease" climate change and make the sky look less blue. In May, the Government's Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria) announced Ł56.8m for 21 "climate cooling" projects, which include injecting aerosols into the sky to reflect sunlight away from Earth. However, the report found there were "major uncertainties" and argued the plan may have devastating knock-on effects, particularly if deployed by rogue groups. Prof Jim Haywood, of atmospheric science at the University of Exeter, said: "What you do in one place can cause climate change in a different place. "Stratospheric aerosol injection deployment in the northern hemisphere could impact the position of the tropical monsoon and lead to droughts in sub-Saharan Africa. "Everyone there relies on subsistence farming, so it quickly devastates if there is a drought there. "In the southern hemisphere, it could lead to an increase in North Atlantic hurricane frequency and intensity, it could lead to winter droughts over the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula." A "termination effect" whereby sun dimming technology was suddenly stopped, could also lead to rapid warming of up to 2C in decades, and cause devastating effects for ecosystems.

Note: Modifying the atmosphere to dim the sun involves catastrophic risks. Regenerative farming is far safer and more promising for stabilizing the climate. In our latest Substack, "Geoengineering is a Weapon That's Been Rebranded as Climate Science. There's a Better Way To Heal the Earth," we present credible evidence and current information showing that weather modification technologies are not only real, but that they are being secretly propagated by multiple groups with differing agendas.

Why the for-profit race into solar geoengineering is bad for science and public trust
2025-11-04, MIT Technology Review
https://www.technologyreview.com/2025/11/04/1127532/why-the-for-profit-race-i...

As scientists who have worked on the science of solar geoengineering for decades, we have grown increasingly concerned about the emerging efforts to start and fund private companies to build and deploy technologies that could alter the climate of the planet. The basic idea behind solar geoengineering, or what we now prefer to call sunlight reflection methods (SRM), is that humans might reduce climate change by making the Earth a bit more reflective, partially counteracting the warming caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases. Many people already distrust the idea of engineering the atmosphere–at whichever scale–to address climate change, fearing negative side effects, inequitable impacts on different parts of the world, or the prospect that a world expecting such solutions will feel less pressure to address the root causes of climate change. Notably, Stardust says on its website that it has developed novel particles that can be injected into the atmosphere to reflect away more sunlight, asserting that they're "chemically inert in the stratosphere, and safe for humans and ecosystems." But it's nonsense for the company to claim they can make particles that are inert in the stratosphere. Even diamonds, which are extraordinarily nonreactive, would alter stratospheric chemistry. Any particle may become coated by background sulfuric acid in the stratosphere. That could accelerate the loss of the protective ozone layer.

The Top Secret Testimony of CIA's MKULTRA Chief, 50 Years Later
2025-10-30, National Security Archive
https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/briefing-book/dnsa-intelligence/2025-10-30/top-secr...

The CIA experienced "as many failures as successes" in exploring the intelligence applications of LSD and other drugs, according to the October 1975 U.S. Senate testimony of the Agency's former top chemist, Sidney Gottlieb, the man most closely associated with the notorious MKULTRA behavior control research projects. The long-secret transcripts of Gottlieb's testimony to the staff of the United States Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities ("Church Committee") were published today by the National Security Archive, 50 years after the historic intelligence oversight hearings, along with a selection of declassified CIA memos and other records concerning MKULTRA. The Church Committee transcripts are among the highlights of the Digital National Security Archive collection, CIA and the Behavioral Sciences: Mind Control, Drug Experiments and MKULTRA. Gottlieb was a key bureaucratic player who signed off on hundreds of MKULTRA subprojects and who developed clandestine relationships with universities, prisons, hospitals, private laboratories, and private foundations that made it difficult to trace the programs back to the Agency. The Church Committee faced considerable obstacles in reconstructing the story, especially since Gottlieb and CIA director Richard Helms destroyed most of the original project records in 1973.

Note: According to Gottlieb's testimony, the CIA covertly dosed an unwitting individual with a massive amount of LSD to deliberately induce psychosis, causing him to experience violent paranoia and leading an unsuspecting psychiatrist to declare him mentally ill. This was done explicitly to discredit the man in the eyes of his colleagues–a tactic deemed as operationally useful for destroying a person's credibility without ever touching them. Israel-Palestine: the bereaved parents bringing hope to a divided land
2025-10-29, Positive.News

There are two people on the Zoom screen in front of me. One, a Palestinian man in the ancient city of Jericho in the West Bank. The other, an Israeli woman in Tel Aviv. They're separated, literally and metaphorically, by a wall. And they're united in loss: specifically, the loss of a child. Something else unites them: a determination to build bridges of shared understanding at a time when the gulf between their peoples seems deeper than ever. They're both part of the Parents Circle – Families Forum (PCFF), membership of which has the grimmest of qualifications: that your child has been killed in the conflict. Their backgrounds could not be more different, and yet, partly because of their loss, they've arrived in the same place. The fighting has to end, and bereaved parents are better placed than most to achieve that. "Before you start to talk [in those meetings]," says [parent Bassam] Aramin, "you can see in their eyes the fear – even hatred – for this Arab, this ‘terrorist'. And after you finish your human story, suddenly there is no fear. Suddenly there is empathy. Some of them cry. Some of them want to shake your hand. This is, as Robi always calls it, our ‘emotional breakthrough'." ‘Robi' is Robi Damelin, now director of international relations for the PCFF. Born and raised in a comfortable home in South Africa, she followed in a family tradition – her uncle had helped defend Mandela in his first treason trial – by speaking out against apartheid.

Why the US Has Such a Brutal Penal Regime
2025-10-28, Jacobin
https://jacobin.com/2025/10/us-penal-regime-prisons-policing

Compared to other developed nations, the United States is an extreme outlier in the severity of its criminal legal system. Police in the United States kill civilians at between five and forty times the rate of similarly rich countries, for instance, and the United States imprisons people at about seven times the rate of economically comparable countries. The brunt of this aggressive penal regime is borne of course by poor Americans, particularly poor black Americans. Recently, all of the states in the US have begun to impose fees and charges and costs on offenders and their families: people now have to pay for staying in prison as if they're guests in a hotel. Or if they're on probation instead of being sent to jail, they have to pay for the probation supervision, or they have to pay for a urine test. In one police department in Missouri, offenders who have been tasered have to pay $25 toward the cost of using the taser. In this country, particularly in the neoliberal era, the local state simply doesn't have the capacity or resources to invest in communities and provide housing, schools, jobs, income support, health care services, and so on. What it does have is police and jails, and states have prisons. The politics of the day ... mean that it's always going to be much more likely that the police and the punishment are the first resort, rather than long-term investments in communities, work, families, income support, and jobs.

UFO tracker recorded thousands of USOs on US coasts: Report
2025-10-27, News Nation
https://www.newsnationnow.com/space/ufo/ufo-tracker-underwater-objects-us-coa...

A UFO reporting app has logged thousands of sightings of unidentified submersible objects, aka USOs, just off U.S. coasts, according to reports. The app Enigma, which bills itself as the largest "standardized repository of anomalous sightings," received reports on over 30,000 unidentified objects since its launch in 2022. While UFO and UAP sightings are traditionally thought of as mysteries of the sky, Enigma claims to have logged 9,000 sightings within 10 miles of U.S. shorelines or major bodies of water. UFOs and UAPs have become common acronyms in news headlines as members of Congress have called for more transparency on what the government knows – and doesn't know – about unidentified anomalous phenomena. The term "UFO" was added to the world's lexicon by the U.S. Air Force in 1952, just five years after the Roswell sighting. The term "UAP," or "unidentified anomalous phenomena," is used to describe unexplainable sights in the sky, not just unidentified flying objects. Members of Congress have led a bipartisan effort to investigate and declassify government documents containing information regarding such unidentified phenomena following the testimony of UFO whistleblower David Grusch, a former Air Force and intelligence officer, before a House Oversight subcommittee in July 2023. Grusch testified the U.S. is concealing a longstanding program that retrieves and reverse engineers unidentified flying objects.

Virginia Giuffre beaten, raped by ‘well-known prime minister' in attack that broke Epstein spell, her memoir reveals
2025-10-18, New York Post
https://nypost.com/2025/10/18/us-news/virginia-giuffre-was-left-bloodied-and-...

Prominent Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre was brutally bloodied, beaten and raped by a "well-known prime minister" in a series of savage encounters that finally helped the teenager break free from the sex trafficker's spell. In her posthumous memoir "Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice," Giuffre recalled begging Epstein to step in after the unnamed politician forced her to beg for her life. In her memoir, Giuffre said she first met the "Prime Minister" on Epstein's private island in the US Virgin Islands sometime in 2002, when she was just 18. She was ordered to escort him to a cabana, but the man made it clear as soon as they were alone that "he wanted violence." "He repeatedly choked me until I lost consciousness and took pleasure in seeing me in fear for my life. Horrifically, the Prime Minister laughed when he hurt me and got more aroused when I begged him to stop. I emerged from the cabana bleeding from my mouth, vagina, and anus. For days, it hurt to breathe and to swallow," Giuffre wrote. The final breaking point came that summer when Epstein and his madam, Ghislaine Maxwell, pleaded with Giuffre to carry their child. Barak has repeatedly denied Giuffre's abuse claims. Barak was a personal friend of Epstein's and used several million dollars of Epstein's money to finance a security company. He had visited Epstein on his private island and had boarded his private plane.

Note: Virginia Giuffre, who died earlier this year in May 2025, once declared, "I am making it publicly known that in no way, shape or form am I suicidal ... I have made this known to my therapist and GP – If something happens to me – in the sake of my family do not let this go away and help me to protect them. Too many evil people want to see me [quieted]." For more along these lines, read our concise summaries of news articles on Jeffrey Epstein's criminal enterprise.

"Delete Day," organized by several Gen Z-led groups, called on young people to excise an addictive app from their lives, starting, for now, with their phones. The event was not heavily promoted on social media, unsurprisingly, and minimally online. Instead, attendees relied on more old-school methods, like word-of-mouth. They decorated the park's entrance with chalk signs like "Delete your apps on the grass" and gave out hand-drawn stickers and pamphlets detailing how to save their data before nixing accounts on apps like Instagram. When they were ready, they could take a seat on the lawn, on picnic blankets, with candles, glow lights, and a living room lamp. The event, which drew about 80 participants, featured a few short speeches from the organizers, the deletion ritual, and a no-phones party. Nick Plante, 25, one of the speakers who organizes events around "attention activism" in the city, [said] that the night's tone was meant to be positive. The idea was to bring people together organically. "We wanted to really, really get in on a couple of people and change their lives very deeply," [said grad student Gabriela] Nguyen. Speakers shared their own struggles of growing up with social media, from being distracted at school to living with looming self-consciousness. "If you're like me, you've canceled on a friend because the pull to just stay at home and chill with all your devices is just too strong," Nguyen said.
