AI-powered military neurotech: Mind enhancement or control?
2026-01-22, Military Times
https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2026/01/22/ai-powered-milita...

Neurable, a consumer neurotechnology startup, has partnered with the Air Force to study whether electrode-studded headphones can track service members' cognitive fitness. The $1.2 million project adds to the Pentagon's growing investment in the $3 billion market for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) – helmets, earbuds, other wearable devices and medical implants that use artificial intelligence to make sense of brain signals. Now, advances in AI enable BCIs to interpret or change brain activity with unprecedented accuracy and speed. So much so that some scientists and neuroethicists say the capacity to monitor signals that reveal a warfighter's or a veteran's mental states, visual perceptions or inner dialogue may outpace the ability to shield that data from misuse. "One could certainly imagine how enforced use of such devices could create a very dystopian basis for behavioral control," warned James Giordano, director of the National Defense University's Center for Disruptive Technology. Some neuroethicists, however, cautioned that the use of brain wearables may also invade troops' privacy and foster prejudice. "We need to be much more reflective on, much more concerned about and much more focused on the implications of altering a person's brainwaves," through neurofeedback training, "as compared to having them work out more or do more pull-ups," said Jared Genser, a lawyer and co-founder of the Neurorights Foundation.

Top Scientist Jacques Vallée Says UFO Databases Logged 260,000 Sightings and 'Non-Human Creatures'
2026-01-21, International Business Times
https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/top-scientist-jacques-vallee-says-ufo-databases-log...

Few names carry as much weight in the UFO world as Jacques Vallée. A respected computer scientist, astronomer and long time investigator of unidentified aerial phenomena, Vallée has advised governments and space agencies for decades. He says scientific databases linked to a defence intelligence programme logged around 260,000 screened UFO sightings and hundreds of reports involving non-human creatures. The claim is explosive not just for its scale but because Vallée speaks as someone who helped build the system himself. Vallée explains that several years ago he initiated a system of multiple databases used by a DIA sponsored programme at Bigelow Aerospace. He says he worked as a cleared member of a scientific team tasked with studying UFO and UAP phenomena. According to Vallée, the data warehouse contained approximately 260,000 screened reports of anomalous objects in flight. Crucially, he adds that the same databases also logged hundreds of reports involving creatures described as live or dead and linked to crashed or landed vehicles of unknown origin. Researchers documented a total of seven creatures. Vallée notes that all of the creatures he referenced appeared to breathe air normally. He links these descriptions to professional observations made shortly after the incidents, including anatomical and behavioural notes recorded before the death of at least one recovered entity.

Note: Dr. Jacques Vallée's work involved working closely with Dr. Allen Hynek, the scientific advisor to the US Air Force's Project Blue Book; co-developing the first computerized map of Mars for NASA in 1963; and playing a key role in the development of the early Internet. Reported UFO/UAP craft may represent far more than unexplained aerial phenomena. They could point toward breakthrough technologies capable of transforming life on Earth. A New Technological Paradigm? ‘Nairobi Birdman' Rescues Helpless Birds in Kenya, Giving Them a Home He Never Had
2026-01-20, Good News Network
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/nairobi-birdman-rescues-helpless-birds-in-ken...

The "Nairobi Birdman" is filling gaps in Kenyan bird conservation on the streets of the country's biggest city. Seen around town with an injured kite perched on his head, it's just one of dozens that Rodgers Oloo Magutha has nursed back to health. These have included pigeons, storks, owls, and other wild birds that fall a-fowl of Nairobi's powerlines, cars, windows, or other hazards that industrialized areas pose to winged wildlife. Magutha himself is not from Nairobi, but grew up in poverty next to Kenya's Lake Nakuru National Park. A haven for bird life, Magutha used to sneak into the park to watch birds, birthing a love of nature and wildlife in the young man that lasts to this day. These quiet moments were rare in his difficult, homeless existence. He grew up without a family home, but as often as it was possible, he'd take care of birds he found that were hurt, hungry, or diseased. Today, Magutha has reliable lodgings, and he's used them to house birds which have in turn made him a local social media figure. His Instagram account has a distinctly African flavor ... but he also drops educational bombs for young fans, such as how flamingos get their pink coloration. His dream is to eventually open a proper avian rescue center; one that's legal, safe, and equipped with the facilities needed to care for them. Until then, he carries on with the help of donations, feeding the birds he saves as much as he is able to, and releasing them when or if they're able to return to the wild.

Mysterious 'vehicle of unknown origin' hidden at US Navy Base raises questions about secret UFO program
2026-01-19, Daily Mail
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-15464157/Mysterious-vehicle-u...

A mysterious UFO has been allegedly stored at a little-known US Navy base on the East Coast for decades as the military continues to reverse-engineer its secrets. A new report has claimed that Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland, better known as Pax River, has kept an 'exotic vehicle of unknown origin' secretly housed there, possibly since the 1950s. According to anonymous sources tied to Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), which is headquartered at Pax River, certain military programs at the base have been involved in analyzing and exploiting technology recovered from non-human craft for years. UFO whistleblower Luis Elizondo stated in written testimony to Congress that a specially built hangar was constructed at Pax River specifically for the transfer of extraterrestrial technology. Under oath, Elizondo described a plan where this hangar would help major defense contractor Lockheed Martin move non-human technology to another company called Bigelow Aerospace for further study and analysis. Last year, Dr Hal Puthoff, a physicist and electrical engineer who worked on the government's psychic spy and UFO research programs, revealed on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast that the US military has recovered more than 10 spacecraft since the infamous Roswell incident. Puthoff claimed that some of these craft were actually fully intact craft that had been 'gifted' to humans by extraterrestrials.

Bank of England Warned to Prepare for Aliens Due to Imminent US 'Disclosure'
2026-01-18, Yahoo Finance
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/bank-england-warned-prepare-aliens-212252751.html

Helen McCaw, who served as a senior analyst in financial security at The Bank of England, sent a message to the bank with a significant alien warning. The short of it? McCaw wrote to Andrew Bailey, the bank's governor, urging him to prepare for the possibility that the United States, specifically the White House, may confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life. McCaw's overarching concern includes her belief that if the White House were to declare this, it would significantly impact the markets and could ignite bank collapses. She cited the United States appearing to be "partway through a multi-year process to declassify and disclose information" regarding alien life forms. "The United States government appears to be partway through a multi-year process to declassify and disclose information on the existence of a technologically advanced non-human intelligence responsible for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs)," she claimed. The longtime Bank of England employee expanded on the topic, discussing the possibility of a "power or intelligence greater than any government," referencing the "unknown intentions" that would come with it. McCaw added to her belief that the government's leadership and central banks may not be "properly briefed" on the topic of aliens or other life forms. McCaw also mentioned the chance of a "collapse in confidence," assuming people feel uncertain about the market and how to it.

In New Doc ‘The Age of Disclosure,' Military Servicemen Expose More Details About UFOs at Vandenberg
2025-12-28, The Independent
https://www.independent.com/2025/12/28/in-new-doc-the-age-of-disclosure-milit...

Today, Vandenberg is best known for the booming SpaceX launches that send satellites into orbit. But once upon a time, it was a hotbed for UFO sightings. This year, those sightings resurfaced. Details of extraterrestrial encounters on the Central Coast were discussed in government hearings and explored in the newly released documentary The Age of Disclosure (2025). The film features government insiders who claim the feds have spent 80 years trying to cover up the existence of non-human life. Based on what they claim to have seen, the former admirals, lieutenants, and colonels were convinced that UAPs are real and they are definitely not human. Witness testimonies recount highly unusual experiences at Vandenberg, such as a gigantic red, glowing square object that allegedly hovered over the base in 2003. In total, five incidents involving UAPs occurred at Vandenberg between 2003 and 2005, according to Jeffrey Nuccetelli, a former military police officer with 16 years of active service under his belt. He relays it all in detail: a red, glowing square the size of a football field, erratic lights dancing over the ocean or blinking in and out of the skyline, a huge sphere of light floating over his own home, and the intimidation of witnesses to keep their mouths shut. Vandenberg – home to the National Missile Defense Project – was "repeatedly visited by UAP," back when personnel were completing "historic launches," Nuccetelli said.

Healing in the hills: How grassroots mediators are reweaving trust in rural Haiti
2025-12-09, Peace Insight
https://www.peaceinsight.org/en/articles/healing-in-the-hills-how-grassroots-...

In the misty hills of southern Haiti, the town of Beaumont sits on a fault line of tension. Yet in this uncertain landscape, a quiet movement has been unfolding, one led not by international nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) or government officials, but by local mediators who believe that peace must begin with conversation. Their work, modest in scale but profound in effect, is helping rebuild what years of unrest have eroded: people's belief in one another. At the heart of this effort is Médiation Lakay ("community-based mediation"), a grassroots initiative reflecting the work of local community leaders in Haiti who mediate disputes over land and resources. Elders, local officials, and church figures convene to discuss disputes before they escalate. Rather than waiting for formal judicial intervention, these mediators facilitate dialogue between families, helping them reach agreements and restore communication. "It's not about who wins," says Wilfrid, a local Haitian pastor. "It's about whether both sides can share a plate of rice after." The process blends traditional dispute resolution with restorative justice principles, an exchange of listening, acknowledgment, and reparative action. Disputes that might have lasted years are often resolved in weeks. The team keeps no written records, to preserve confidentiality and community trust. By focusing on rebuilding relationships rather than assigning blame, Médiation Lakay is gradually reweaving the social fabric that conflict had torn apart. "People came to understand that fear had made them cruel," [school teacher] Josette says. Beyond conflict resolution, the group's meetings have become spaces for collective healing, where villagers discuss shared trauma from past hurricanes or lost livelihoods. By focusing on rebuilding relationships rather than assigning blame, Médiation Lakay is gradually reweaving the social fabric that conflict had torn apart.

He was called one of the most violent prison guards in America. He got promoted
2025-12-09, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/09/alabama-prison-abuse-roderick...

Roderick Gadson, an Alabama prison guard, was questioned under oath about an incident in which he and other officers used such devastating force against a prisoner that the man had to be airlifted to hospital to treat his injuries. Gadson was shown a photograph of the man, Steven Davis. He was lying in an ICU bed breathing through a tube, his cadaverous face bruised and covered with blood, his eyes black and sunken. Gadson was asked whether he felt that the amount of force used had been appropriate, given the way Davis looked. He replied: "I don't feel like nothing. I just did my job." On 4 October 2019, Gadson and five other officers were called to respond to a security breach inside Donaldson correctional facility. Davis ... was lying prone and unresistant on the ground. Gadson took the lead. One of the witnesses said the officer hit Davis "with his metal stick in the head, picked him up, throwed him down. He stomped the dude with his size 15 boot. The guy's head bounced like a basketball." David died the following day. The cause of death was officially recorded as homicide caused by "blunt force injuries of head sustained in an assault". Despite evidence of a physical assault by Gadson and the other officers, they were all cleared after an internal investigation. Six months later, Gadson was promoted ... to sergeant. Then, in July 2021, he [was] promoted a second time, 21 months after a prisoner in his care had been beaten to death. Now he holds the exalted status of lieutenant.

MS-13 and Trump Backed the Same Presidential Candidate in Honduras
2025-12-09, The Intercept
https://theintercept.com/2025/12/09/asfura-honduras-election-trump-ms-13/

Gangsters from MS-13, a Trump-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, intimidated Hondurans not to vote for the left-leaning presidential candidate... in most cases urging them to instead cast their ballots in last Sunday's election for the right-wing National Party candidate [Nasry "Tito" Asfura, known as Papi a la Ă“rden or "Daddy at your service] – the same candidate endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Gang members drove voters to the polls ... and threatened to kill street-level activists for the left-leaning Liberty and Refoundation, or LIBRE, party if they were seen bringing supporters to the polls. "A lot of people for LIBRE didn't go to vote because the gangsters had threatened to kill them," a resident of San Pedro Sula, the second-largest city in Honduras, told The Intercept. The MS-13 interference took place as the U.S. president, who has obsessed over the gang since his first term, extended an interventionist hand over the elections. On November 28, Trump threatened to cut off aid to Honduras if voters didn't elect Asfura while simultaneously announcing a pardon for Asfura's ally and fellow party member Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras convicted in the U.S. on drug trafficking and weapons charges last year. Testimony at Hernández's trial indicated that members of MS-13 were subcontracted as early as 2004 through the corrupt, U.S.-allied police commander Juan Carlos "El Tigre" Bonilla to provide security for caravans of cocaine alongside soldiers. "The people in Honduras are afraid," [leader of the Honduran national emergency call system Miroslava Cerpas] said, "because organized crime has been emboldened by the pardon of Juan Orlando Hernández."

Note: As chief of the Honduran National Police, convicted drug trafficker Juan Carlos Bonilla ("El Tigre") oversaw TIGRES, a special unit within the National Police trained by US special forces and operating alongside Honduran officials trained at Fort Moore, Georgia (formerly known as The School of Americas) which graduated more than 500 individuals later implicated in widespread human rights abuses across Latin America including the killing, torture, and suppression of political activists. American-Led Regime Change Is Usually Disastrous
2025-12-01, Foreign Policy
https://foreignpolicy.com/2025/12/01/venezuela-iraq-regime-change-trump/

The United States is the world leader in regime change, toppling 35 foreign heads over the past 120 years, by one reckoning. Overthrowing another country's leader is a routine enough tactic that it has its own acronym among academics: FIRC, or foreign-imposed regime change. According to a tally by Alexander Downes, an associate professor and political scientist at George Washington University ... the United States carried out nearly a third of all of about 120 forced ousters of foreign leaders around the world between 1816 and 2011. About 20 of those 35 U.S.-backed regime changes were in Central and South America or the Caribbean. In some of those countries, the United States removed and replaced leaders again and again, with the concentration of someone kicking a vending machine to get the right candy bar to drop. In 1954 alone, for example, Washington ousted three Guatemalan leaders in succession. Globally, a third of all forced regime changes by all countries led to civil wars in the targeted nation within 10 years. Experts see warning signs for any attempt at regime change in Venezuela, a petrostate where misgovernment by socialist autocrat Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chavez, coupled with international sanctions, have trashed the economy and created millions of refugees. The Trump administration has accused Maduro of being in league with drug traffickers, although the United States overstates Venezuela's role in drug smuggling.

The CIA Turned 6 Dogs Into Remote-Controlled Killers. It Was a Trial Run for a Far More Sinister Human Experiment.
2025-11-27, Popular Mechanics
https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a69561041/cia-remote-controlled-dogs...

The public is now well aware of the Central Intelligent Agency's misadventures in mind control throughout the 1950s and 1960s. MKUltra–the agency's top-secret and wide-ranging human experimentation program–involved 149 subprojects that made test subjects out of thousands of unsuspecting Americans, jolting them with high-voltage shocks, zapping them with radio waves, and dosing them with psychedelic drugs in a bid to develop brainwashing techniques. But humans weren't MKUltra's only non-consenting participants. Animal subjects also played a starring role. Surgeons implanted microphones into cats' ears. An elephant was allegedly injected with a massive amount of LSD. And ... scientists implanted electrodes into the brains of six dogs in an attempt to control their movement and turn them into remote-controlled assassins. The goal of that last initiative, Subproject 94 ... "was to examine the feasibility of controlling the behavior of a dog, in an open field, by means of remotely triggered electrical stimulation of the brain," according to heavily redacted documents declassified in 2002. During Operation Fantasia, in an effort to scare the Japanese into surrender, OSS scientists painted foxes with radioactive paint that glowed in the dark, hoping to recreate a Shinto portent of doom: the kitsune, a shapeshifting, supernatural fox spirit. The plan was eventually scrapped, but not before a trial run in which the OSS released 30 glowing foxes into Washington D.C.

‘A fire, a dog, and the starry sky': the teens overcoming phone-addiction through Arctic pursuits
2025-11-25, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/nov/25/folktales-film-teens-anxiety-pho...

Nineteen-year-old Hege is stricken by all the common anxieties of her generation. She spends too much time scrolling through socials on her phone, and as a result she is obsessed with how other people perceive her, and highly stressed when it comes to interacting with real humans in the flesh. Hege and her classmates are packed off to for 12 months: a "folk high school" ... 200 miles above the Arctic circle. Here the students don't sit in classes, they "wake up their Stone Age brains" by learning how to pitch a tent, keep themselves warm at minus 30C, and drive dog sleds across the icy landscape. Hege may still be overthinking things when she dons a pair of RayBans at her first campfire, but soon she goes hours without even remembering to check her mobile, and eventually there is nothing greater in the world to her than dashing through the snow on the back of a dog sled, her body racing but her mind finally standing still. In a world where there's great emphasis on individualism, folk high schools stress community and social interaction in a way that often goes under the radar. Do these young people come out of their folk high school experience better equipped to cope with the challenges of the modern world? "It's a tricky question, because of course part of the point is to evade the modern world," says Ewing. "They're definitely not better at managing ChatGPT or using AI. But they're better equipped to be decent human beings who can maybe not shrink under pressure in the future."

Note: A 2025 study found that cutting social media use for just one week significantly reduced symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia in young adults. Explore more positive stories like this on reimagining education.

Atrazine probably causes cancer in humans, WHO cancer agency says
2025-11-25, US Right to Know
https://usrtk.org/pesticides/atrazine-probably-carcinogenic-iarc/

The World Health Organization's cancer research agency has classified atrazine – the second most widely used herbicide in the United States – as "probably carcinogenic to humans," adding to growing concerns about toxic exposures in the nation's farm belt. The evaluation means the first and second most widely used herbicides in the U.S. – glyphosate and atrazine – are now both considered probable human carcinogens by the world's leading independent cancer-hazard authority. Atrazine is banned in the European Union and other countries due to health and environmental concerns, but remains widely used in the U.S., where it is a common contaminant in drinking water, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Despite these concerns, U.S. regulators allow its continued use. The new assessment by the WHO's cancer agency comes 10 years after the agency's landmark finding that glyphosate, the world's most heavily used herbicide, is also "probably carcinogenic to humans." Both atrazine and glyphosate are also endocrine disruptors, meaning they can disrupt key hormone systems that regulate growth, development and metabolism. Both herbicides are also largely produced by companies outside the United States. Syngenta, owned by ChemChina, produces most of the atrazine used in the U.S., while Bayer, based in Germany, is the dominant producer of glyphosate. The cancer designation for atrazine comes amid reports of rising cancer rates across the U.S. Corn Belt.

Medical advances could be used to develop mind-altering brain weapons, scientists warn: ‘Wake-up call'
2025-11-24, New York Post
https://nypost.com/2025/11/24/science/scientists-issue-wake-up-call-over-mind...

Advances in neurological medicine might seem like a boon to humanity. However, UK scientists are warning that the tech could also be used to develop "brain weapons" that can alter human consciousness, perception, or behavior. This apocalyptic "wake-up call" was floated in the book, "Preventing Weaponization of CNS-acting Chemicals: A Holistic Arms Control Analysis," by researchers Michael Crowley and Malcolm Dando. Dando, a biological and weapons control expert, said that the "same knowledge that helps us treat neurological disorders could be used to disrupt cognition" and "induce compliance." It could even be used in the "future [to] turn people into unwitting agents," like something out of a dystopian thriller, he argued. According to Crowley ... humanity has entered a new age of warfare where the "brain itself could become a battlefield" due to the increased ubiquity and sophistication of pharmaceutically-induced mind control. "The tools to manipulate the central nervous system – to sedate, confuse or even coerce – are becoming more precise, more accessible and more attractive to states," Crowley said. Dando and Crowley are traveling to the Hague ... for a key meeting of the Conference of the States Parties (CSP), an international body that oversees the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. While the convention prohibits the use of chemical weapons in war, there is a loophole that might permit their use in other sectors, like law enforcement. To safeguard against this possibility, Dando and Crowley propose a multi-pronged "Holistic Arms Control" approach.

‘Offline' Trend Sees Thousands Attending Phone-Free Concerts, Dates, and Events Where You Can ‘Find Your People'
2025-11-19, Good News Network
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/offline-trend-sees-thousands-attending-phone-...

A recent survey from the British Standards Institution found that 68% of teen respondents said they feel worse when they spend too much time on social media, and 47% would remove them from existence if they could. So it's not surprising that hundreds of thousands of people are now attending ‘IRL' events (in real life) where phones are either banned or limited. Several new services are now curating "offline experiences" for social gatherings and dating, and the number of these events that are landing on the calendars of Americans and Europeans is a testament to the deep desire for human-to-human contact. The Offline Club of Europe has over half-a-million Instagram followers (an ironic yardstick of success), and chapters across the continent gather at venues where one's smartphone is locked in a box at the start of the event. Once inside, reading, chatting, sharing a drink, playing a board game–in short, everything we used to do to socialize–are preferred over looking down at your phone. In addition to the Offline Club, companies like Kanso, Sofar Sounds, and the app 222, are making a business out of disconnecting humans from their social media feeds that overflow with targeted ads and AI-generated drivel. Each one has found itself a niche, but all are returning us to the social activities that our parents used to do before phones. There are likely more options for engaging with the world and humanity offline; these are just a few that are exploding in popularity.

The pioneering dairy farmer keeping calves with their mothers
2025-11-19, BBC News
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly452540dzo

Traditional dairy farms calves are separated from their mothers within 24 hours of their birth. It allows farmers to collect the milk that the calves would naturally drink and sell it to be made into dairy products. But one farmer in the south of Scotland is pioneering an unconventional method of commercial dairy farming - keeping cow and calf together for about six months. David Finlay, who farms 130 dairy cows near Gatehouse of Fleet, claims the system results in higher animal welfare standards and a more profitable business. Now he is calling for the Scottish government to fund a radical new cow-with-calf development programme. The Finlays implemented the cow-with-calf system with their herd, but the decision almost bankrupted the business when they did not have enough milk left to sell to market. After overhauling their business plan and adopting a new approach, the couple found a way of making the system financially viable. David claims that among the benefits are happier cows and staff, healthier animals and an increase in life-expectancy. "What we've found is we can carry 25% more cows on the farm, because the young stock are growing and maturing so much faster and the cows are yielding 25% more milk," he said. "So even with the calves drinking a third of their mother's milk, the system is actually more efficient, more productive and more profitable." Rainton Farm is now the largest commercial cow-with-calf dairy farm in Europe.

Ultra-processed food linked to harm in every major human organ, study finds
2025-11-18, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/nov/18/ultra-processed-food-linked-t...

Ultra-processed food (UPF) is linked to harm in every major organ system of the human body and poses a seismic threat to global health. UPF is also rapidly displacing fresh food in the diets of children and adults on every continent, and is associated with an increased risk of a dozen health conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and depression. The findings, from a series of three papers published in the Lancet, come as millions of people increasingly consume UPF such as ready meals, cereals, protein bars, fizzy drinks and fast food. In the UK and US, more than half the average diet now consists of UPF. For some, especially people who are younger, poorer or from disadvantaged areas, a diet comprising as much as 80% UPF is typical. Evidence reviewed by 43 of the world's leading experts suggests that diets high in UPF are linked to overeating, poor nutritional quality and higher exposure to harmful chemicals and additives. A systematic review of 104 long-term studies conducted for the series found 92 reported greater associated risks of one or more chronic diseases, and early death from all causes. One of the Lancet series authors, Prof Carlos Monteiro ... said the findings underlined why urgent action is needed to tackle UPF. "The first paper in this Lancet series indicates that ultra-processed foods harm every major organ system in the human body. The evidence strongly suggests that humans are not biologically adapted to consume them."

Series of Reports Ignored by Media Show Jeffrey Epstein's Extensive Work With Israeli Intelligence
2025-11-12, Common Dreams
https://www.commondreams.org/news/epstein-israeli-intelligence-investigation?...

Epstein's relationship with the Israeli government has long been the subject of speculation and conspiracy theorizing. But the extent of the connections has long been difficult to prove. That is, until October 2024, when the Palestinian group Handala released a tranche of more than 100,000 hacked emails from former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who led the country from 1999 to 2001. Barak is known to have been one of Epstein's closest associates. He visited the financier's estates in Florida and New York more than 30 times between 2013 and 2017, years after Epstein had been convicted for soliciting a minor for prostitution. Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's most prominent victims, who died earlier this year, alleged in her posthumous memoir that a figure, described only as "the Prime Minister," but widely believed to be Barak, violently raped her on Epstein's private Caribbean island when she was 18. Epstein helped to facilitate an agreement for Mongolia to purchase Israeli military equipment and surveillance technology from companies with which the men had financial ties. An Israeli spy, Yoni Koren, stayed at Epstein's New York apartment for weeks at a time on three separate occasions between 2013 and 2015. Koren served as an intermediary between the American and Israeli governments, helping Barak organize meetings with top intelligence officials, including former CIA Director Leon Panetta.

Unesco adopts global standards on ‘wild west' field of neurotechnology

Unesco has adopted a set of global standards on the ethics of neurotechnology, a field that has been described as "a bit of a wild west". She said the new standards were driven by two recent developments in neurotechnology: artificial intelligence (AI), which offers vast possibilities in decoding brain data, and the proliferation of consumer-grade neurotech devices such as earbuds that claim to read brain activity and glasses that track eye movements. The standards define a new category of data, "neural data", and suggest guidelines governing its protection. A list of more than 100 recommendations ranges from rights-based concerns to addressing scenarios that are – at least for now – science fiction, such as companies using neurotechnology to subliminally market to people during their dreams. "Neurotechnology has the potential to define the next frontier of human progress, but it is not without risks," said Unesco's director general, Audrey Azoulay. The new standards would "enshrine the inviolability of the human mind", she said. Advocates for neurotech regulation emphasise the importance of safeguarding personal data. Unesco's standards highlight the need for "mental privacy" and "freedom of thought". "What's happening with all this legislation is fear. People are afraid of what this technology is capable of. The idea of neurotech reading people's minds is scary," said Kristen Mathews, a lawyer who works on mental privacy issues.

Note: In 1965, Jose Delgado famously stopped a charging bull with an electronic device implanted in its brain. How far might this technology progressed since then? For more along these lines, read our concise summaries of news articles on microchip implants and mind control.

The latest figures and the statistical yearbook "The World of Organic Agriculture" was presented on 11 February 2025 at BIOFACH, the world's leading trade fair for organic food in Nuremberg. The global organic farming area increased by 2.5 million hectares in 2023, reaching almost 99 million hectares. The sales of organic food reached nearly 136 billion euros in 2023. The 26th edition of the yearbook "The World of Organic Agriculture", jointly published by FiBL and IFOAM – Organics International, shows that the growth in area and number of farms in 2023 exceeded that of previous years, particularly due to increases in Latin America. Data were provided by 188 countries. By the end of 2023, 98.9 million hectares were managed organically, marking a 2.6 percent increase (+2.5 million hectares) from 2022. Latin America experienced the largest increase, adding 1 million hectares (10.8 percent growth), while Africa recorded the highest relative growth, expanding by 24 percent to reach 3.4 million hectares. Oceania remains the leading region for organic farming, with 53.2 million hectares, accounting for more than half of the global organic area. It is followed by Europe, which has 19.5 million hectares, and Latin America, with 10.3 million hectares. By country, Australia leads with 53 million hectares, followed by India (4.5 million hectares) and Argentina (4 million hectares). There are notable increases observed in Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Burkina Faso.
