A devil-worshipping sailor in the Royal Navy has become the first registered Satanist in the British Armed Forces. Chris Cranmer, 24, a technician serving on the Type 22 frigate Cumberland, has been officially recognized as a Satanist by the ship's captain. That allows him to perform satanic rituals aboard and permits him to have a non-Christian Church of Satan funeral should he be killed in action. A spokesman for Britain's Ministry of Defence told CNN Sunday that it had a duty to allow members of the forces to practice their religion. "The Royal Navy allows this kind of approach because it is clearly in line with current regulations. We are not aware of any other individuals who want to be registered as Satanists." Cranmer ... is now lobbying the Ministry of Defence to make Satanism a registered religion in the Armed Forces. He says he wants Satanists to be able to join the military without "fear of marginalisation and the necessity to put up with Christian dogma." The defense ministry told CNN that Cranmer went to his commanding officer with a request to practice his beliefs on board his ship and, after consultation with the ship's chaplain, this was granted. The decision was at the discretion of the captain, the MoD, said, and was on the basis that it did not impinge on the operational effectiveness, safety or security of the ship, or the well-being of colleagues. "From a military perspective, I believe in vengeance," [said Cranmer]. "If I were asked if I were evil, I would say yes - by virtue of the common definition."

FBI crime laboratory experts gave inaccurate testimony at the trials of defendants in the World Trade Center blast and the 1989 bombing of Avianca Flight 203 in Colombia, and lab scientists and technicians used shoddy analysis and did not follow procedures in scores of other cases, the Justice Department's inspector general concluded. Those findings, coupled with serious problems in the way lab officials conducted themselves in the Oklahoma City bombing and the O.J. Simpson case, are part of a sweeping, 18-month investigation into significant failures at the lab at FBI headquarters in Washington. In addition to conclusions about how lab officials have performed in court, the inspector general also found that the bureau's scientists and technicians did not properly document their test results and poorly prepared lab reports. Overall, in investigating work at the lab's three key sections - the chemistry-toxicology, explosives and materials analysis units - [Inspector General Michael] Bromwich said: "We found significant instances of testimonial errors, substandard analytical work and deficient practices." Investigators also discovered instances where dictation on lab reports was altered and lab supervisors did not properly manage their agents. Bromwich's report does not say when or why the problems began at the lab, but some of the cases studied date back to the 1980s. As early as 1991, top FBI management was alerted to failures at the lab.

The Justice Department inspector general's office has determined that the FBI crime laboratory working on the Oklahoma City bombing case made "scientifically unsound" conclusions that were "biased in favor of the prosecution," The Los Angeles Times reported. The still-secret draft report ... also concludes that supervisors approved lab reports that they "cannot support" and that FBI lab officials may have erred about the size of the blast, the amount of explosives involved and the type of explosives used in the bombing. The draft report shows that FBI examiners could not identify the triggering device for the truck bomb or how it was detonated. It also indicates that a poorly maintained lab environment could have led to contamination of critical pieces of evidence. The investigation into the crime lab practices began in 1996 following complaints from FBI chemist and whistle-blower Frederic Whitehurst. The draft report's harshest criticism was of David Williams, a supervisory agent in the explosives unit. "We are deeply troubled by Williams' report, which contains several serious flaws," the report said. "These errors are all tilted in favor of the prosecution's theory of the case. We conclude that Williams failed to present an objective, unbiased, competent report." Those flaws reportedly include the basis of his determination that the main charge of the explosion was ammonium nitrate. The inspector general called such a determination "inappropriate," the Times said.

For 40 years the United States Public Health Service has conducted a study in which human beings with syphilis, who were induced to serve as guinea pigs, have gone without medical treatment for the disease and a few have died of its late effects, even though an effective therapy, was eventually discovered. The study was conducted to determine from autopsies what the disease does to the human body. It is too late to treat the syphilis in any surviving participants. The experiment, called the Tuskegee Study, began in 1932 with about 600 black men mostly poor and uneducated, from Tuskegee, Ala., an area that had the highest syphilis rate in the nation at the time. Four hundred of the group had syphilis and never received deliberate treatment for the Venereal Infection. A control group of 200 had no syphilis and did not receive any specific therapy. As Incentives to enter the Program, the men were promised free transportation to and from hospitals, free hot lunches, free medicine for any disease other than syphilis and free burial after autopsies were performed. The Tuskegee Study began 10 years before penicillin was found to be a cure for syphilis and 15 years before the drug became widely available. Yet, even after penicillin became common, and while its use probably could have helped or saved a number of the experiment subjects, the drug was denied them. Direct two way radio communication between an animal's brain and a computer has been established for the first time by a team of scientists at Yale University. In an experiment, electrodes implanted in a chimpanzee's brain picked up electrical brain waves, which were then transmitted to a computer by a small receiver-transmitter atop the animal's head. The computer ... returned [a] control signal to another part of the brain through the receiver. Stimulated by the control signal, the latter part of the brain internally turned off the brain activity originally sensed by the computer. The head of the team is Dr. Jose M. R. Delgado, a 55-year-old Spanish-born neurophysiologist at the School of Medicine. Dr. Delgado ... has attracted both attention and controversy in the past for his experiments inducing anger, fear, affection, pleasure and other emotions in animals and human beings by telemetry stimulation of specific regions of the brain. “We are now talking to the brain without the participation of the senses,” said Dr. Delgado. “This is a pure and direct communication - I call it ‘non sensory communication.’” Dr. Delgado said he expected to use the new technique on human beings within a year. What's the true story behind Titu Singh's apparent reincarnation? After Titu was born, he began telling his family tales of a past life. "He would tell his mom and dad loads of stories about how he had a wife and two kids, and they owned a radio cassette shop," [Tom] Carty explains. "Sure enough, when the parents brought the boy to the radio cassette shop back then, guess who was there? His wife," Carty explains. "And he starts speaking to his wife and saying, â€I know your name, and I know our two kids' names,' and going into mad detail." Not only that, but Titu claimed he had been murdered – and he knew who did it. Eventually, the boy identified the killer, who was later prosecuted for the crime. Most astonishingly, Titu reportedly knew that he had been killed via gunshot – though, contrary to many online versions of the events, he said that he was unable to identify the attackers. While later reports say his words were used to identify the culprit, there's no solid evidence that this is the case. Still, some people are convinced that Titu was telling the truth. Bad diets kill millions of people globally every year. Legislators and government officials have worked to rein in this public health crisis by enacting laws that require food companies to be transparent about their ingredients and limit the advertising of unhealthy foods. In public, the world's biggest and richest food companies ... say they want to be part of the solution. But behind closed doors, they have taken governments to court to delay, dilute, and derail public health laws, which the companies say violate their rights. 239 lawsuits were filed between 2010 and 2025 across Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, the US, the UK, and India against public health policies targeting food and beverages such as front of pack labelling, regulating advertising junk food to children, soda taxes, and taxes on ultra processed foods. The cases add up to 595 years of litigation, representing a significant burden on the governments defending their health policies. Of the cases brought by private companies where the plaintiff was identifiable, more than 1 in 3 came from just nine parent groups, led by Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Mondelez. Their actions are not only prolonging the public health crisis but also cost countries billions of dollars in both legal and healthcare costs. Millions of Americans are borrowing money or draining their savings to buy groceries, highlighting the financial strain many households face as the cost of living rises, new research has found. More than a quarter of working-age adults who relied on credit cards to buy groceries were either unable to pay their balance in full or missed their minimum payment, according to the Urban Institute, a nonpartisan think tank. About one in 10 adults relied on so-called "buy now, pay later" loans to cover their groceries – of those, about a third missed a payment last year, the analysis found. About 20% of working-age adults said they had tapped long-term savings that weren't intended for everyday expenses, such as an emergency fund, at least once in the last 12 months to pay for groceries, the researchers said. Over the past five years, grocery prices have jumped 32%, making food affordability a top concern. In a May CBS News poll, more than three-quarters of Americans said their incomes aren't keeping up with inflation. About 12% of low- and middle-income adults who used credit cards to pay for groceries missed a minimum payment last year, triple the rate for higher-income consumers, the study found. Lower-earning households were also about four times as likely to miss a buy now, pay later payment as higher-income households.

In the latest UFO files release from the Pentagon, it was revealed that security radar and armed patrols detected an unidentified object in the sky near a Texas nuclear weapons facility. According to a document titled "Pantex Unidentified Object Incident Report," a "diamond-shaped" object was spotted over the Pantex nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility located in Amarillo, Texas, on Sept. 1, 2015. The object was described as hovering in a "non-threatening" manner in a "northerly trajectory at approximately 10-15 mph" for several minutes at close range. Plant personnel were made aware of the flying object and began to follow it in a vehicle for several miles until the object was no longer visible. Some personnel described the "diamond-shaped" flying object as "approximately 4-feet tall and 2-feet wide at the bottom," and "thinner at the top." Per the report, there was conflicting color of the UFO, with some eyewitnesses citing it as black while others described it as blue, red and silver. A video of the incident was obtained by the Ground Surveillance Radar Tower (GSR) and reviewed by Sandia National Labs, a U.S. Department of Energy research and engineering facility. It was noted the object did not come near any "sensitive assets" at the nuclear power plant nor was it maneuvering in a threatening manner and stayed over "unpopulated areas of the plant." Avi Loeb, the leader of Trump's UAP Science Advisory Council, shockingly revealed on Congressman Eric Burlison's podcast "Fresh Freedom" that an executive of the $137 billion military contractor Lockheed Martin claimed the company operated a crashed-UFO retrieval program. "I had a [former] high level executive from Lockheed Martin visit my home and I asked him, â€Is there any truth to these claims?' And he said â€It's not wrong,'" Loeb revealed. Loeb claims retrieved tech would be enough to prove humans are not the only intelligent beings on Earth – and believes private corporations are ready to participate in the Trump administration's disclosure effort. "If such materials exist, we would love to analyze them. With just a gram of material, we will be able to determine if it originated outside the solar system," Loeb [said]. Former Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program member Hal Puthoff suggested on the same podcast that Lockheed was ready to transfer materials to AATIP between 2008 and 2012 – but that plan was killed by the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology. Luis Elizondo, who had a leadership role in AATIP, similarly claimed in congressional testimony that a craft of unknown origin was being held in Lockheed labs and was set to be transferred to the Navy's Pax River Facility in Maryland. Burlison, on his tour of government facilities rumored to be housing UFOs, visited Pax River earlier this year.

Earlier this week, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth observed what he called a successful test of "directed energy weapons" against drone and cruise missile attacks as part of the Trump administration's "Golden Dome for America" project. These new weapons, also known as "DEWs," promise defensive measures that can counter drone and missile attacks. They also offer applications against human targets, both on the battlefield and, more controversially, off it. The weapons ... damage their targets not with physical projectiles but with highly concentrated electromagnetic energy fired at the speed of light in the form of sound and particle beams, microwaves and, most famously, lasers. Shooting down such drones with conventional missiles is a drain on resources that favors the attacker. DEWs offer a means to counter this strategy without straining the defender's financial resources. With cheap drone attacks, "your enemy can bankrupt you, so we have to deploy these lasers," former U.S. Navy pilot Matthew "Whiz" Buckley [said]. "The economics are starting to level the battlefield here." Their long-term health impacts on human targets are also not yet clear, which has been a source of controversy following the use of DEWs to disperse crowds, including protesters, and the belief that such weapons may have been used covertly on U.S. officials both at home and abroad, resulting in those attacked suffering from what's been called "Havana syndrome."

In 2023, a stroke transformed Naresh Shanbhag, a 53-year-old smooth-talking sales professional in Bengaluru, into someone who was unable to speak words, let alone sentences. Initially, when a doctor friend suggested music therapy, Shanbhag thought it would be interesting, but was skeptical that listening to songs would help him recover. That skepticism disappeared right away. "From the very first session, I was hooked," he says. In a soundproof room in India's first music cognition lab at Bengaluru's National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Shanbhag was given simple rhythms and beats to emulate. When his therapist noted that he could sing more fluently than he could talk, he asked Shanbhag to sing sentences. "One year later, I still do this," he laughs. "Every morning when I go to fetch milk and groceries, my shopping list is a song that I belt out!" The lab is run by Shantala Hegde, a professor of neuropsychology as well as a trained classical vocalist. She and her team of researcher-collaborators and PhD scholars provide rehabilitation services to dozens of patients per month who have brain injuries like Shanbhag. "Music is a powerful tool for neuropsychological rehabilitation because you engage the entire brain to engage with it," Hegde says. "We give them specific musical exercises that engage the entire brain, activate different brain areas and strengthen the connections between them," Hegde clarifies.

The network has been around since 2006, and regularly gathers politicians, entrepreneurs, foreign officials, academics, Silicon Valley founders and even Hollywood folks for invitation-only retreats. there are a few weird things we've discovered from this leak. Dialog grades its retreat attenders on a hidden scale, ranking them according to their wealth and fame. Everyone is assigned a grade of A, B or C, with the "C" grade being awarded to the most famous and influential. Lower-grade attenders are charged full-price roughly 70% of the time, while only about a quarter of VIPs have to shell out the bigger bucks. Planned events range from sessions like "Bring Back Nuclear" to others focused on "Disinformation and Deepfakes", "Contrarian AI Takes", "Democracy Under Surveillance" and "Money (Does?) Buy Happiness." The agenda also includes sessions on cult-building (moderated by the founder of the Christian site Pray.com, no less), one on "Navigating WWIII" and a session titled "How's Your Sex Life?" Dialog has a matchmaking system that pairs members for networking and dating. The data exposed in the leak includes home addresses, phone numbers, emails, dates of birth, and other bio-datas.

A woman with severe Alzheimer's disease who spent years communicating in monosyllables started initiating conversations after receiving a large dose of psilocybin. The woman, who also had urinary incontinence and was unable to get around without assistance, also regained control of her bladder and experienced improved mobility in the weeks after taking the drug. The case report, published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience, adds to evidence that psychedelics can acutely alter cognition and brain function. The woman, who has not been named, is 83 and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 10 years ago. With the consent of her son, the woman was given 5 grams of the Enigma strain of the highly potent magic mushroom species Psilocybe cubensis, administered orally. She initially began sweating profusely and entered a prolonged deep sleep-like state. But around 19 hours later, her son reported her initiating a conversation that included her memories and reflections, which lasted around 4 hours. Over the subsequent days and weeks, Lago and his colleagues observed her regaining urinary continence, dressing herself and spontaneously entering conversations. The researchers have stressed that her Alzheimer's has not been reversed, but she may have some residual functional capacity that psychedelics can tap into. News reports have historically allowed us as a society to monitor our government when it exercises its greatest power: ending a person's life. But the state of Indiana has decided to inhibit that public access by banning members of the media from attending executions – unless the condemned person chooses to give a reporter a spot that could instead have gone to their relatives or friends. An appellate court upheld the ban this week. Perhaps the media ban has nothing to do with preserving the dignity of the condemned and is instead about obstructing government accountability and public oversight. Executions in this country were once highly public affairs. Often held in town squares, any member of the public could attend. In the 1830s, government officials began to enact laws that made executions private events. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, support for capital punishment in America has decreased from 80 percent in 1994 to 52 percent in 2026. This division necessitates transparency – otherwise, the only nongovernment actors able to tell the public the truth are dead. As a result of restrictions placed on media access to prisons, prisons have become unjustifiably cruel, less humane and more difficult to monitor. Restricting press freedom erodes human rights and constitutional safeguards and blinds the public to the kinds of cruelty and abuse depicted in HBO's Oscar-nominated documentary "The Alabama Solution."

[Nick] Pope worked at the UK Ministry of Defence for more than two decades, from 1985 to 2006. For three of those years – 1991 to 1994 – he worked on what was known colloquially in the department as "the UFO desk". One encounter jumped out at him. It had been reported in Rendlesham Forest by two American airmen on Christmas night in 1980. Expecting an explosion, they flung themselves to the ground, but none came. Penniston rose to his feet and saw the bright light beginning to fade, revealing a triangular craft resting in a small clearing on the forest floor, multicoloured neon lights darting over its black opaque surface until they too dimmed and the only light remaining was emanating from underneath the craft.

Have you ever paid more for a product because a brand told you it was good for you and the planet? Many activewear shoppers do exactly this, trusting that the "healthy" image on the label matches what is actually in the fabric. The Texas Attorney General's office has launched a formal investigation into the activewear brand Lululemon. The question: does its activewear contain PFAS, a group of toxic "forever chemicals"? This sits uncomfortably with a brand built on wellness. Lululemon has denied the claims. It says it phased out PFAS in 2023. The case highlights a wider problem: a gap between what fashion brands promise and what is actually in their products. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals used to make fabrics resistant to water, stains and sweat. They earned the name "forever chemicals" because they do not break down easily in the environment or our bodies. Instead, they accumulate over time. The single biggest predictor of how happy you are at any given moment isn't your income, your relationship status, your health, your career, or the city you live in. It's whether your mind is focused on what you're doing right now or wandering somewhere else. That's the whole finding. Present equals happy. Absent equals unhappy. Everything else is details. In 2010, Harvard psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel Gilbert published a paper in the journal Science with a title that sounds like a Buddhist proverb: "A Wandering Mind Is an Unhappy Mind." They developed an iPhone app that pinged 2,250 people at random intervals throughout the day, asking three questions: What are you doing? What are you thinking about? How happy are you? People's minds wandered from what they were doing 46.9 percent of the time. And when their minds wandered, they were consistently less happy than when they were focused on whatever was in front of them. This held true regardless of the activity. What you're thinking about matters more than twice as much as what you're doing. You could have the perfect life – the career, the partner, the health, the house – and spend most of it mentally somewhere else, and the somewhere else would make you miserable. We don't struggle with presence during peak experiences. Nobody's mind wanders during their wedding or the birth of their child or the moment they land the job they wanted. Those moments are vivid enough to command attention. They handle presence for you. The problem is that peak experiences make up maybe two percent of your life. The other ninety-eight percent ... is ordinary, and your capacity to be present during ordinary moments determines the quality of your entire existence. That's where happiness actually lives. In the ninety-eight percent. In the ability to be present in an ordinary moment without wishing it were something else.
