US government ramps up mass surveillance with help of AI tech, data brokers – and your apps and devices
2026-04-21, The Conversation
https://theconversation.com/us-government-ramps-up-mass-surveillance-with-hel...

Your neighbors' Ring cameras film your walk to the car. Your car's sensors, cameras and microphones record your speed, how you drive, where you're going, who's with you, what you say, and biological metrics such as facial expression, weight and heart rate. Your car may also collect text messages and contacts from your connected smartphone. Meanwhile, your phone continuously senses and records your communications, info about your health, what apps you're using, and tracks your location. As you enter [a] store, its surveillance cameras identify your face and track your movements through the aisles. If you then use Apple or Google Pay to make your purchase, your phone tracks what you bought and how much you paid. All this data quickly becomes commercially available, bought and sold by data brokers. Aggregated and analyzed by artificial intelligence, the data reveals detailed, sensitive information about you that can be used to predict and manipulate your behavior, including what you buy, feel, think and do. Companies unilaterally collect data from most of your activities. This "surveillance capitalism" is often unrelated to the services device manufacturers, apps and stores are providing you. The U.S. government ... now purchases massive quantities of your information from commercial data brokers. Disclosure of documents allegedly hacked from Homeland Security reveal a massive surveillance web that has all Americans in its scope.

How Project Maven Put A.I. Into the Kill Chain
2026-04-15, New Yorker
https://www.newyorker.com/books/under-review/how-project-maven-put-ai-into-th...

[Veteran journalist Katrina Manson's] new book, "Project Maven: A Marine Colonel, His Team, and the Dawn of AI Warfare," is an ... account of the ongoing reconfiguration of the U.S. armed forces for a new technological era. "Project Maven" is structured as an intellectual and professional biography of Drew Cukor, a Marine Corps intelligence officer largely responsible for ... this military transformation. Cukor insists that Maven was never supposed to be a weapon. He frequently defends the project as nothing more than an integrated data platform ... for a world made better and safer by A.I. warfare. In 2018, Google employees staged a massive walkout to protest the company's work on a primitive iteration of the project. In the aftermath of the Google fiasco, Cukor turns to Palantir (in addition to Microsoft and Amazon) to make Maven a reality. NATO now has its own Maven contract with Palantir, and that prompted ten member nations to pursue one, too. The Maven Smart System has become a global surveillance apparatus–it can keep track of forty-nine thousand airfields all over the world–but its current work is hardly limited to intelligence provision and analysis. A "single click," [journalist Katrina] Manson reports, "could send coordinates through a tactical data link to a specific weapons platform so that it could fire at the target." The entire process, from target identification to target destruction, is four clicks. Officials told Manson that Maven was "accelerating operations and ‘enabling lethality' at combat headquarters around the world." Maven is only one part of the A.I. tool kit. Manson uncovers evidence of two clandestine killer-robot programs, one aerial and the other aquatic, which are being developed in haste. For the first time, the Pentagon's proposed budget contained a line item for comprehensively self-directing systems. A machine can shoot, Manson reports, up to "ten times faster than an assassin."

Scientists Studied the Dreams of People Who Nearly Died. What They Found Is Incredible.
2026-04-14, Popular Mechanics
https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a70996492/near-death-experience-drea...

The human brain remains deeply mysterious. Scientists have mapped its synapses and neurons in extraordinary detail, yet ... the felt experience of being you still defies efforts at a full explanation. However, researchers do have one fascinating window into that inner world: near-death experiences, or NDEs. As the name suggests, near-death experiences are altered states of consciousness reported by upwards of one-fifth of people who experience a life-threatening medical emergency. Some common traits of NDEs have emerged over nearly 50 years of research: intense emotions of peace and joy, out-of-body experiences (OBEs), encounters with dead relatives, altered perceptions of time, and elevated lucidity, among others. These accounts from people who've nearly died appear to contradict what scientists expect to occur in the brain as its regions begin to shut down one by one. In a new qualitative study published in the journal Psychology of Consciousness: Theory, Research, and Practice, [researcher Nicole] Lindsay and her colleagues reveal details of how individuals' dreams changed drastically following an NDE. A participant named Basil said he could confidently recall one dream every week or two, but after his near-death experience, that recall became a nightly occurrence. Others reported that dreams become intensely vivid after an NDE and that the separation between dreaming and waking was much more ambiguous than it was before.

Ghost Murmur tool that ‘found US airman' defies the laws of physics
2026-04-10, Times of London
https://www.thetimes.com/world/middle-east/israel-iran/article/iran-war-how-c...

One of the most intriguing secrets of Operation Epic Fury is how, using an "exquisite" piece of classified technology, the CIA succeeded in finding the injured airman in Iran by detecting his heartbeat, the tiniest evidence of human life concealed in a narrow crevice up a 7,000ft mountain ridge. The technology that led to the airman's rescue by Seal Team Six commandos has been outed as a CIA "tool" called Ghost Murmur. It was reportedly developed as a highly classified "blue skies" invention by Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works, the famous laboratory where young, brilliant scientists and engineers devote their time to finding solutions to impossible concepts. John Ratcliffe, the CIA director, hinted at the new technology in a press conference this week. "We deployed both human assets and exquisite technologies that no other intelligence service in the world possess to a daunting challenge, comparable to hunting for a single grain of sand in the middle of a desert," Ratcliffe said. On the face of it, a futuristic magnetic sensing device ... pinpointed the missing colonel's heartbeat across a 40-mile stretch of land. Ghost Murmur, as described, would appear to push the boundaries of physics beyond even the most exceptional human brain or computer. Intelligence sources would not confirm or deny the existence of Ghost Murmur. But reportedly the "CIA tool" relies on what is called quantum magnetometry, which can find signals of human hearts, aided by artificial intelligence to separate out all the other noises getting in the way.

Note: While it's unclear whether the Ghost Murmur tool was actually responsible for rescuing the injured soldier, this technology is not out of the realm of possibility. Since the 1960s, the CIA had already developed poison weapons capable of causing heart attacks remotely. Learn more about real-life exotic weapon technologies used by militaries around the world. He was sentenced to death despite not pulling the trigger. An unlikely coalition saved his life
2026-04-08, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2026/apr/08/charles-sonny-...

With all of his appeals exhausted, Charles "Sonny" Burton had already chosen the last meal he would have before being put to death by nitrogen gas at Alabama's Holman correctional facility. His fate was in the hands of Kay Ivey, Alabama's governor and a staunch supporter of capital punishment who has presided over more than 25 executions – more than any other Alabama governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. But on the morning of 10 March, just two days before Sonny was to be put to death, Ivey commuted his sentence to life without parole. No new court ruling or legal evidence had come out, but the governor was forced to respond to an unusually diverse coalition [that] made the case that executing a 75-year-old man who didn't pull the trigger – while the man who did died in prison with a life sentence – was simply wrong. Burton had been on death row since 1992 for the killing of Doug Battle during a robbery at a Talladega AutoZone. Derrick DeBruce, the man who fired the weapon, had his sentence reduced to life without parole in 2014 after winning a federal appeal. That meant that of the six people who took part in the robbery, Burton alone was facing execution. Schulz's clemency petition cited precedents from Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas – states where Republican governors who supported the death penalty had refused to execute inmates who played a lesser role in a killing than a co-defendant who got a lighter sentence.

DHS Launches Massive "Less Lethal" Chemical Weapons Buying Spree
2026-04-03, The Intercept
https://theintercept.com/2026/04/03/less-lethal-chemical-weapons-tear-gas-pro...

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is set to order a vast arsenal of chemical grenades, sprays, projectiles, and other weapons. CBP will spend up to $50 million on what it refers to as "Less Lethal Specialty Munitions," a euphemism for weapons intended to merely hurt or disable a target rather than killing them. The agency is looking for a vendor who can supply vast quantities of 123 different types of munitions across 10 different categories, [a] contracting document says. Federal agents' indiscriminate use of "less-lethal" chemical weapons against the nonviolent demonstrators became a hallmark of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. Contract documents show the Department of Homeland Security will continue to stockpile a massive arsenal of tear gases and projectile weapons. Fired at close enough range, so-called less lethal rounds can easily kill or maim their target. Anti-ICE demonstrator Kaden Rummler lost sight in his left eye after he was shot in the face by a federal officer in January. After the Los Angeles Police Department fired one such round directly into the face of another protester last summer, he was injured so seriously that he required surgery and had his jaw wired shut for six weeks. "Distraction devices," which emit loud sounds, bright lights, or other effects to stun targets, were also on CBP's wish list, with plans to purchase 13,000 of them.

Note: According to the Associated Press, "more than 119,000 people have been injured by tear gas and other chemical irritants around the world since 2015 and some 2,000 suffered injuries from "less lethal" impact projectiles." Avi Loeb reacts to JD Vance's belief aliens are ‘demons'
2026-03-30, NewsNation
https://www.newsnationnow.com/space/ufo/avi-loeb-jd-vance-aliens-demons/

Avi Loeb, a theoretical physicist and the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University, says he has "no issue" with Vice President JD Vance's perspective on who aliens are. Vance was asked about the possibility of releasing more government files on UFOs and aliens. The vice president, who is Catholic, said he does not believe they are beings from another planet; instead, he says, they are demons. Vance noted many world religions have long acknowledged the existence of what he described as "weird things out there" that are difficult to explain. Loeb [said] Vance's theory is not new based upon scientific findings and Judeo-Christian beliefs. "I don't see necessarily a conflict between religious beliefs and science as long as everyone agrees that we should attend to the evidence that should guide us," Loeb said. "If the U.S. government cannot figure out what these objects are, then of course, people have their own speculations or theories, or they connect them to some past traditional thoughts." Vance's comments came as the Trump administration has signaled interest in releasing more information on UFOs and unidentified aerial phenomena. Loeb suggested that labeling aliens as evil entities may be too far for his taste. "All I'm saying is we should be open-minded to the possibility that we're not at the top of the food chain within the Milky Way galaxy," he said.

Pentagon to adopt Palantir AI as core US military system, memo says
2026-03-21, Yahoo News/Reuters
https://finance.yahoo.com/sectors/technology/articles/exclusive-pentagon-adop...

Palantir (PLTR)'s Maven artificial intelligence system will become an official program of record, Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg said in a letter to Pentagon leaders, a move that locks in long-term use of Palantir's weapons-targeting technology across the U.S. military. Maven is a command-and-control software platform that analyzes battlefield data and identifies targets. It is already the primary AI operating system for the U.S. military, which has carried out thousands of targeted strikes against Iran over the last three weeks. Designating Maven as a program of record will streamline its adoption across all arms of the military. The memo ordered oversight of Maven be moved from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency to the Pentagon's Chief Digital Artificial Intelligence Office within 30 days. Future contracting with Palantir will be handled by the Army, the letter said. Feinberg's order is a significant win for Palantir, which has landed a growing stream of contracts with the U.S. government, including a deal announced last summer with the U.S. Army worth up to $10 billion. Those awards have helped double the company's stock price in the past year, lifting its market value to nearly $360 billion. Maven can rapidly analyze huge amounts of data from satellites, drones, radars, sensors and intelligence reports, and use AI to automatically identify potential threats or targets.

Disappearance of ex-general with UFO secrets a ‘grave crisis'
2026-03-10, NewsNation
https://www.newsnationnow.com/missing/mccasland-disappearance-national-securi...

The Feb. 27 disappearance of a retired Air Force major general with a vast institutional knowledge about UFOs is a "grave national security crisis," says investigative journalist Ross Coulthart. William Neil McCasland, 68, was reported missing after leaving his Albuquerque, N.M., home on foot, according to local authorities, who have teamed up with the FBI to find the former military official. To Coulthart, the way McCasland vanished – reportedly along a running trail without his watch and phone – suggests something nefarious. McCasland ... is also considered a trove of information about whatever secrets the government may be hiding about UFOs, "unidentified anomalous phenomena" (UAPs) and nonhuman intelligent life. During his tenure in the Air Force, McCasland oversaw classified space weapons programs and was head of research at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, Coulthart notes. That facility has long been rumored to house fragments of extraterrestrial debris from Roswell, N.M. Coulthart said he finds it interesting McCasland's disappearance comes shortly after President Donald Trump promised disclosure about whatever files the government holds on UFOs and alien life. "The timing is screechingly relevant," Coulthart said. "The fact that Gen. Neil McCasland has disappeared off the face of the earth is a grave national security crisis. This is a man with some of the most sensitive secrets of the United States in his head."

Note: Hacked emails released by Wikileaks reveal Tom DeLonge, the founder of To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science, telling former White House chief of staff John Podesta that General McCasland was involved in a project related to extraterrestrial material, having previously led the Wright Patterson Air Force Base lab where the Roswell incident materials were reportedly taken. McCasland allegedly worked with DeLonge and helped assemble his advisory team. In our new 23-minute video UFO Disclosure Explained: New Solutions for Humanity, civil rights advocate and leading attorney for the UFO disclosure movement Daniel Sheehan and WantToKnow.info Director Amber Yang explore how this topic will open the door to technologies and ideas that could transform how we address humanity's greatest challenges.

‘A gift that falls from the sky': why farmers are using Etna's ash as fertiliser
2026-02-26, The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/feb/26/volcanic-ash-farmers-usin...

In the Sicilian town of Giarre overlooking Mount Etna, Andrea Passanisi, a tropical and citrus fruits producer, uses an unusual fertiliser on his 100-hectare (247-acre) stretch of land: volcano ash. Like hundreds of farmers and citizens of rural towns perched on the slopes of Europe's highest and most active volcano, the 41-year-old's family has had to deal with the nuisance of falling volcanic ash for generations. But it is only in recent years that the quantity of ash has become so excessive that it required an alternative approach. With every eruption, towns such as Giarre experience an average of 12,000 tonnes of ashfall daily, which the wind can transport as far as 800km (497 miles). In July 2024, Catania – Sicily's second-largest city, located at the foot of Mount Etna – registered 17,000 tonnes of ash daily, which took nearly 10 weeks to collect. For years, farmers such as Passanisi were led to believe the phenomenon was a danger to crops, polluting irrigation waters and requiring special equipment and days off work to clean up. But a five-year project by the University of Catania raised awareness of the potential for ash to become a resource in the production cycle of many different sectors, including agriculture. "It allows us to use fewer chemicals, which makes fertilising cheaper and more sustainable, respecting the equilibrium of nature without abusing it," Passanisi says. "It's the future of agriculture."

Trump promises info dump on UFOs, UAPs and extraterrestrials
2026-02-20, NewsNation
https://www.newsnationnow.com/politics/trump-ufo-uap-et-aliens/

President Trump on Thursday suggested the federal government will soon share the information it has about extraterrestrials, UFOs and unidentified anomalous phenomena, the broader category of unexplained objects known as UAPs. In a brief post on Truth Social, Trump said he'll direct the Pentagon and other departments to begin the process of "identifying and releasing" government files related to these topics. "Based on the tremendous interest shown, I will be directing the Secretary of War, and other relevant Departments and Agencies, to begin the process of identifying and releasing Government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs), and any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters. GOD BLESS AMERICA!" he wrote. Earlier Thursday, Trump refused to say whether he's seen evidence that aliens had visited Earth. The president was asked directly about "nonhuman visitors" while talking to reporters aboard Air Force One. Trump said that former President Barack Obama shared classified information by recently suggesting that aliens are real. Obama, who made the statement in an interview, later clarified that his comments about aliens being real refer to a belief that, given the size of the universe, it is statistically unlikely we are the only life to exist.

Pfizer CEO says he used ‘emotional blackmail' to get employees to achieve impossible goals during COVID-19
2026-01-29, Fortune
https://fortune.com/2026/01/29/pfizer-ceo-interview-team-motivation-covid-vac...

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla says he used extreme team-motivating tactics to meet seemingly impossible deadlines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bourla admitted to using what he called "emotional blackmail" in order to create and deliver vaccines faster. Specifically, his team was tasked with creating a vaccine to combat the new illness from scratch. Once it was created, Pfizer needed to far exceed prior shipping and supply-chain constraints; at one point, it even had to produce its own dry ice because not enough was available externally. Prior to COVID, Pfizer had been producing only 200 million vaccine doses per year. That needed to scale quickly to 3 billion doses. All around the office, Bourla put up signs that read, "Time is life." On several occasions, employees came to him to say there would need to be a delay of several weeks in meeting deadlines. In response, Bourla asked them to calculate how many people would die during the additional weeks they requested. In April 2020, that would have meant about 1,800 Americans dying per day; any longer delay could mean tens of thousands of lives. He said he feels "a little bit" guilty about putting that much pressure on his workers. But he argues it was necessary, not only to save the "world, the economy, and society, but make them feel like the most important people on earth, those that were able to deliver." "They will never forget," Bourla added.

Note: Whistleblowers say that the speed may have come at the cost of data integrity and patient safety. During Pfizer's pivotal COVID-19 vaccine trials, regional director Brook Jackson reported a long list of concerns: falsified data, unblinded participants, and unresolved safety issues to the FDA and was fired the same day. A short time later, the FDA gave Pfizer's emergency authorization for its vaccine to be used publicly. Despite Jackson's claims, the FDA only visited 9 of the 153 Pfizer trial sites, before giving Pfizer full approval for its vaccine.

Top UFO experts reveal 'whistleblower activity' will finally bring disclosure in 2026: 'The evidence is aligning'
2026-01-18, Daily Mail
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-15428851/Top-UFO-experts-reve...

Whistleblowers, new congressional mandates and mounting political pressure are pushing the US toward what insiders say could be its first true UFO disclosure in 2026. A growing number of insiders from the military and intelligence community are now prepared to testify publicly. That pressure intensified after the November 2025 release of The Age of Disclosure, a documentary featuring 34 current and former US government, military, and intelligence officials discussing an alleged decades-long UFO cover-up. Missouri Congressman Eric Burlison's claims of having a lead on 'new' UFO whistleblowers could be further evidence that disclosure is approaching. Burlison previously drew attention after presenting video footage showing a U.S. military drone firing a Hellfire missile at an unidentified object, only for the weapon to appear to bounce off the craft with minimal damage. Congress has moved to force transparency through the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which mandates new briefings on UAP encounters dating back to 2004. The legislation also requires a review of whether key UFO-related data has been over-classified or improperly withheld from lawmakers. Whistleblowers such as David Grusch ... a former US Air Force intelligence officer and decorated veteran who became a prominent whistleblower, alleged the US government possesses secret programs for recovering and reverse-engineering crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft, including non-human 'biologics.' Alongside official action, speculation has intensified in popular culture. Some ... believe Steven Spielberg's upcoming film Disclosure Day could act as a carefully staged reveal rather than a conventional leak.

U.S. Secret Weapon May Have Incapacitated Maduro's Guards
2026-01-13, Forbes
https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidhambling/2026/01/13/epic-win-us-secret-weap...

"We had no way to compete with their technology, with their weapons. I swear, I've never seen anything like it," a Venezuelan security guard says in a video widely shared on social media and promoted by the White House. His account tells how U.S. special forces in Venezuela captured then-President Maduro using new technology which incapacitated the entire protective team and allowed two dozen U.S. troops to easily defeat hundreds of defenders. Guard: "At one point, they launched something–I don't know how to describe it... it was like a very intense sound wave. Suddenly I felt like my head was exploding from the inside. We all started bleeding from the nose. Some were vomiting blood. We fell to the ground, unable to move." In the 90's and early 2000s, the Pentagon poured resources into the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate, now rebranded the Joint Intermedia Force Capabilities Office. Their task was to develop non-lethal, or less-lethal weapons which ... would disable or incapacitate people. The Pentagon worked on a wide variety of concepts, including strobe dazzlers, malodorants and electroshock projectiles. One of the biggest was the millimeter-wave Active Denial System or ‘pain beam' which could inflict severe pain and drive back rioters from several hundred meters away. A patented device known as Electromagnetic Personnel Interdiction Control (EPIC) ... uses radio waves "to excite and interrupt the normal process of human hearing and equilibrium."

Note: Acoustic or sonic weapons can vibrate the insides of humans to stun them, nauseate them, or even "liquefy their bowels and reduce them to quivering diarrheic messes," according to a Pentagon briefing. These devices can also cause excruciating pain, with some able to heat up skin from a distance and others that can beam sound into the skull of a human. Pentagon bought device through undercover operation some investigators suspect is linked to Havana Syndrome
2026-01-12, CNN News
https://edition.cnn.com/2026/01/13/politics/havana-syndrome-device-pentagon-hsi

The Defense Department has spent more than a year testing a device purchased in an undercover operation that some investigators think could be the cause of a series of mysterious ailments impacting US spies, diplomats and troops that are colloquially known as Havana Syndrome. A division of the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, purchased the device for millions of dollars in the waning days of the Biden administration, using funding provided by the Defense Department, according to two ... sources. Officials paid "eight figures" for the device, these people said, declining to offer a more specific number. The device is still being studied and there is ongoing debate ... over its link to the roughly dozens of anomalous health incidents that remain officially unexplained. The device acquired by HSI produces pulsed radio waves, one of the sources said, which some officials and academics have speculated for years could be the cause of the incidents. Although the device is not entirely Russian in origin, it contains Russian components. The device could fit in a backpack. Havana Syndrome, known officially as "anomalous health episodes" ... first emerged in late 2016, when a cluster of US diplomats stationed in the Cuban capital of Havana began reporting symptoms consistent with head trauma, including vertigo and extreme headaches. In subsequent years, there have been cases reported around the world.

Montana Program Makes Youth Offenders Talk with Their Victims and Recidivism Plummets
2026-01-08, Good News Network
https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/montana-program-makes-youth-offenders-talk-wi...

In Montana, a focus on restorative justice is reducing juvenile recidivism through a nonprofit program that engages them, rather than punishes them. The nonprofit believes that it's actually far more challenging for juvenile offenders to look their victims in the eye and explain why they behaved antisocially than it is to simply serve a suspension from school, where they're distanced from friends and mentors, and often fall behind in their education. The Center for Restorative Youth Justice (CRYJ), is not a new organization, but their influence in Montana is growing. CRYJ receives referrals from Youth Court probation officers, school administrators, or school resource officers made on behalf of a juvenile offender who's broken the law. CRYJ then has a conference with the youth and their parent or guardian, and creates a tailormade program of restorative justice. This can involve peer group discussion, victim-offender meetings, and other situations where the youth is given the forum to reestablish a relationship with the community, rather than something like a school suspension. CRYJ believes that by limiting the overuse of exclusionary discipline and emphasizing a community-driven approach, it can help at-risk youth avoid falling behind in school. We spend a lot of time separating people after there's been harm, but often the deepest healing and learning and moving forward can happen ... when we can actually come together and talk about what happened and how to make things right.

What a Spring Chicken Knows That the New 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines Don't
2026-01-07, The Kucinich Report
https://kucinichreport.substack.com/p/what-a-spring-chicken-knows-that

Popular dietary narratives that romanticize meat heavy or so-called ancestral diets collapse when confronted with the realities of modern food production. What may have made sense in ecological contexts defined by pasture, seasonality, and low chemical inputs no longer maps onto an industrial system dependent on genetically engineered feed, pervasive herbicide use, and routine pharmaceutical intervention. The newly released Dietary Guidelines for Americans double down on that disconnect. Rather than grappling with how food is actually produced in the United States today, they reinforce dietary advice that assumes a food system that no longer exists. The guidelines promote increased consumption of meat and dairy while remaining almost entirely silent on how those foods are produced, what they contain, and whether our land, water, animals, and bodies can bear the cost. In the United States today, the overwhelming majority of meat, eggs, and dairy come from highly intensive industrial systems. These systems rely on confinement, routine drug use, chemically saturated feed, and enormous waste burdens. Animals are routinely administered antibiotics, hormones, beta agonists, coccidiostats, and other pharmaceutical agents, many of which accumulate in animal tissues and enter the human food supply. Health policy that ignores these realities is not reform. It is avoidance.

Generated Police Report Claimed Officer Transformed Into Frog
2026-01-02, Futurism
https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/ai-police-report-frog

The police department in Heber City, Utah, was forced to explain why a police report software declared that an officer had somehow shapeshifted into a frog. As Salt Lake City-based Fox 13 reports, the flawed tool seems to have picked up on some unrelated background chatter to devise its fantastical fairy tale ending. "The body cam software and the AI report writing software picked up on the movie that was playing in the background, which happened to be ‘The Princess and the Frog,'" police sergeant Rick Keel told the broadcaster, referring to Disney's 2009 musical comedy. "That's when we learned the importance of correcting these AI-generated reports." The department had begun testing an AI-powered software called Draft One to automatically generate police reports from body camera footage. The goal was to reduce the amount of paperwork – but considering that immense mistakes are falling through the cracks, results clearly vary. Draft One was first announced by police tech company Axon – the same firm behind the Taser, a popular electroshock weapon – last year. The software makes use of OpenAI's GPT large language models to generate entire police reports from body camera audio. Experts quickly warned that hallucinations could fall through the cracks in these important documents. Critics also argue that the tool could be used to introduce deniability and make officers less accountable in case mistakes were to fall through the cracks.

Guinea-Bissau: The ‘narco-state' the US virtually ignores
2025-12-19, Quincy Center for Responsible Statecraft
https://responsiblestatecraft.org/drug-trade-trump/

On November 26, soldiers of the Presidential Guard took power in yet another West African country. This time, it was Guinea-Bissau – the tiny country on the Atlantic coast better known to the world as the region's first "narco-state." Since its independence in 1974, the former Portuguese colony has endured nine coups, making it one of West Africa's most fragile states. [The country] acts as a key transit point for the cocaine trade between the northern tier of South America and Europe. The latest coup is the second successful military takeover this year in Africa's rapidly expanding coup belt. According to the Geneva-based Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC), "Politics and cocaine in Guinea-Bissau have gone hand in hand for decades. Upheavals in one cause ripples in the other." The United States established diplomatic relations with Guinea-Bissau in 1975. Guinea-Bissau's importance as the key transshipment point for cocaine between Colombia and the fast-growing market in Europe grew steadily over the years since. In 2013, Gen. Antonio Indjai, Guinea-Bissau's senior military official at the time, was charged for conspiring to traffic drugs and procure military-grade weapons including surface-to-air missiles for Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarios de Colombia (the "FARC"). In 2019, one of two large cocaine shipments seized in Guinea-Bissau was linked to ... the Al-Mourabitoun terrorist group, which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

How We Created a Tool That Tells You Where Your Generic Drugs Were Made

To understand how risky drugs could end up in your medicine cabinet, ProPublica spent more than a year and a half investigating the Food and Drug Administration's oversight of the foreign factories that make generic medications and have been cited for violating critical quality standards. It quickly became clear through our reporting that patients and doctors don't reliably have the information they need to make informed decisions about the medicines they take or prescribe. ProPublica has created Rx Inspector, a tool that aims to help. You can look up your generic prescription drugs, and we'll guide you to the specific facility that made them. We were able to link more than 80% of generic prescription drug products in our database to a factory that made them using databases of label information, manufacturing facilities and location data that we sued the FDA for. Additionally, we included the history of FDA actions at those facilities based on a trove of inspection records we assembled. The FDA publishes warning letters that detail "significant violation(s) of federal requirement(s)." We obtained these from the FDA's website going back to 2020. We used the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to find hundreds of import alert lists published by the FDA over more than 15 years. The lists identified factories banned from shipping drugs to the United States because the FDA found manufacturing violations.
